DH, didn’t see south beach for that cheap. I know my friend’s parents just bought a condo in North Miami Beach in one of those luxury highrises for 120K but their maintenance is through the roof (Gym, pool, doorman bla bla bla) and even that was a cheap deal from what they told me. I think anything for 60K in Miami would be in the ghettos.
I would already go for North Jersey than Upstate. Prices are similar to some areas and commute is way shorter. Jersey City or North Bergen comes to mind as well.
DH, I have been toying with an idea of buying something in florida as well for some time no2. I saw houses in West Palm Beach going as cheap as 47K and condos going for around 25K, RIGHT ON THE WATER!!!! and in fairly good condition.
I don’t have anytime right now to actually go there for a week to explore the areas but will probably be doing it shortly. We can talk about it at the next gathering.
According to Anna at Door Sixteen it’s a 75 minute train ride from Beacon to NYC. She adds another 5 minutes for a ferry across the Hudson from Newburgh to Beacon.
mopar, it you seriously consider living in newburgh, best to rent there first – use that time to find house, see if commute is tolerable,….
if you buy and don’t like it, you’re stuck – really stuck

Keep in mind real estate taxes, folks. They are very low in Philly and they are very, very high in N J and upstate NY.
mopar – been back to crackfoods lately? went this past saturday and it was a little dissapointing 🙁
