M4L, I was fantasizing about buying a diner (not a house) in Beacon. So my commute would be five minutes. And all YOU would be paying to come visit US because you would crave our pie and burgers. Ha ha ha.
I keep hearing that Jersey City is more “new yorkish” then Manhattan now. It sucks that the mental barrier of moving across the Hudson is high – alot higher then the east river.
DIBS, I would interested in a large rental bldg in Philly – if prices are decent. keep 1 unit vacant for personal use. rent out the rest. Heard evictions are much much easier & faster in Philly than in NYC – a huge plus when considering to be a landlord
yeah Kens – 120 seems to be standard for the luxury full service buildings.
I saw a few listings on West Ave btw 8th and 14th for sub 100k – but they were in regular buildings.
I have no idea what the good areas in South Florida are supposed to be – its just crazy that stuff is soooo cheap. I wish there were more jobs down there, I’d move in a heartbeat.
I would already go for North Jersey than Upstate. Prices are similar to some areas and commute is way shorter. Jersey City or North Bergen comes to mind as well.
i was born in jersey city and grew up in north bergen. there are some very nice areas in both.
m4l…how large? A few of us might be interested in going in with someone else. Haven’t been looking in quite some time though.
Yes, everything’s easier in Philly.

Taxes are a factor anywhere. It totally depends on what area of each.
My Hudson Co. NJ taxes are only $3,200. That’s NOT bad at all.
You go to the RHNJ areas and yeah the taxes will smack you in the face.

Oh I wouldn’t dream of commuting to the Hudson Valley from NYC. I thought Beacon is one hour, plus the ferry to Newburgh makes it 75 each way. Ugh.

Well you already know Jersey City got my vote as the inexpensive alternative.
An unlimited monthly PATH ticket will only run you $54- and that gives you 6 different stops in Manhattan.
