Reprinted in full, here’s an item from Brooklyn 11211 this morning: “On Tuesday, the Executive Committee of CB1 Brooklyn voted unanimously to institute a moratorium on new liquor licenses in Williamsburg, Greenpoint and the rest of North Brooklyn. The vote was a response to what the leaders of CB1 see as an over saturation of liquor licenses in the area. The Board’s Public Safety Committee, which reviews liquor license applications, met last night to discuss the issue, and left with more questions than answers. The Committee did not vote on a moratorium, but the issue is sure to come at next Tuesday’s full board meeting.” Whoa! Will be interesting to find out what the full board has to say about this.

  1. DIBS – If you’re bemoaning the influx of “hipster” craft beer producers and long for the days of five taps at most, keep in mind that’s a historical anomaly. This city used to have hundreds of breweries. This is an industry finally growing back after being eradicated by prohibition.

You can still get your handful of big-brewer imports at most bars. Choice is a good thing

  2. A moratorium makes so much sense, as opposed to say, actually doing anything to remedy any perceived problems. Anything else would actually take work, and the committee couldn’t just pat itself on the back for doing something (no matter hwo ineffective and idiotic). The committee has exceeded its own well deserved reputation for being comprised of lazy, ignorant, worthless idiots. Why not spend some energy on Williamsburg’s failing, overcrowded schools instead?

  3. tybur6 & DitmasSnark,
I heard (the other day over at the 773 lounge) that Solo was going to re-open and that they’d finally be adding the Kitchen part of Solo Bar & kitchen. That would be nice, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

  4. DIBS – your comment makes no sense to me – hipster beers? Where I come from Newcastle Brown and Old Speckled Hen are old geezer’s drinks. Thats why I drink the Hen at least. They should be drunk at room temperature (or “warm” as you might call it) with a flat cap on your head and a Jack Russell snoozing at your feet. And you don’t tip the publican.

  5. In order to get a liquor license you need to be able to pass 1)credit check and 2)background check. Years ago the law was changed to require that a license holder have a clean record to thwart organized crime folks from getting into the cabaret/bar business. As a result a lot of folks find getting a license is difficult.

Given that, a lot of people try to find 3rd parties to apply for the license. I’d never trust anyone to hold a license for me, because your ability to get liquor (legally) is tied to that license. It’s way too easy for someone to screw your business.
