Freaky Friday: Greenwood Goth
On the same block as yesterday’s supersized makeover and the now-infamous Tile House sits another facelifted architectural wonder some in the neighborhood have taken to calling the Goth House, perhaps because of the Gothic-style iron work, the castle-like brick work and, yes, the dragons affixed to the facade. Benson,
I don’t get it. I think you DO add a great deal to Brownstoner, even though I seldom agree with you. Nevertheless, if you think Mr. B. is mean spirited and his readers “get the satisfaction of engaging in snark to demonstrate their superior class” why on earth do you choose to keep posting here? I sure wouldn’t stick with a blog I found so infuriating.
benson, are you worried because you’ve got really really bad taste?
Denton;
My last word on this matter.
Brownstoner is not like this house. Brownstoner is a commercial enterprise.
Mr. B. and his followers each get something out of these threads: a) he continues in his quest to make taste one of the Great Issues on our borough and b) his followers get the satisfaction of engaging in snark to demonstrate their superior class. Developers are fair game, put to randomly focus on people who are minding their own business, and who put their time and money into building their slice of the American Dream, IS mean-spirited.
I didn’t say that Brownstoner was a general news organization, I said he is an important voice in this borough, and he does not restrict himself to real estate and architecture.
Finally, if folks feel I add nothing here, I invite them to write to Mr. B to have me banned.
Oh, and since there have been nothing but voices praising the homeowner’s efforts, it’s obvious that people can think and make opinions of their own, no matter what Mr. B. may have originally intended, good or bad. That is how it should be. Buildings on a real estate blog are going to get commented on, good, bad, or great. It’s all a matter of opinion. You’re the one making a crusade out of it.
“Benson, every so often you go off on this tangent. Brownstoner is about Brooklyn real estate, it’s not a general news organization. Somewhat like this house, it reflects the interests and quirks of a single individual.”
“well, benson- then instead of constantly complaining about Mr. B and what he does or how he does it, start your own blog.”
‘Nuff said.
Words differently arranged have different meanings, and meanings differently arranged have a different effect. -Blaise Pascal, philosopher and mathematician (1623-1662)
I know this house well and watched it get done. I have a passing acquaintance with the family that owns it.
I can’t say it is entirely to my taste, yet I respect it. The owner did a great deal of the work himself, and he designed it himself. I like when a person has his own vision, that may be different from status quo, and executes it.
There’s also a gargoyle up on the roof you can’t see.
The quality of the iron work in the front ins really excellent and puts that in most brownstones to shame.
It should also be noted that this guy has absolutely the best Christmas and Halloween decorations around, maybe I can get Mr. B to post a pic.

well, benson- then instead of constantly complaining about Mr. B and what he does or how he does it, start your own blog. Then you can call the shots. Otherwise you’re just part of the problem, not the solution. It’s not up to you to decide how someone else should run their blog. Enough already- you’re like a broken record.
Montrose;
According to Mr. B.’s advertisement over there======>,
he now has 200,000 readers a month. Thanks to his well-earned success, he is now a significant voice in the community. He also does not restrict his voice to architecture and real estate. He has things to say about our borough and city at large.
Given that, his continued attempts to elevate the issue of “bad” taste into some type of crusade speaks more to his myopia than anything else. Perhaps it could be argued that it is justified in the case of developers, since they are offering their product to the general public. However, to focus his lens on a particular owner who was minding his own business and putting his own money into building his little slice of the American Dream is myopic at best, mean-spirited at worst.
As for my reference to the homeless person: I stand by it. Again, Mr. B is aiming to be an important voice in our city. In my opinion, that story IS important, and should be cause for reflection on our society. I’d say it’s a little more important than blocked bike lanes or the tear-down of a decrepit timber shed.
