On the same block as yesterday’s supersized makeover and the now-infamous Tile House sits another facelifted architectural wonder some in the neighborhood have taken to calling the Goth House, perhaps because of the Gothic-style iron work, the castle-like brick work and, yes, the dragons affixed to the facade. You can’t make this stuff up! Update: Denton just sent in a photo he had lying around of the Goth House on Halloween. It’s posted on the jump. GMAP

  1. Like I said, can’t take the lawyer outta the girl 🙂 I still don’t see how that is groupthink as opposed to a commonly held belief, but I’ll let it go for now. But, know that one of these days I’m gonna get you in the witness chair and press you for a precise definition of groupthink…call your lawyer!!! LOL

  2. Snappy;

    You’re a good lawyer – you bore down to the issues! Alright, “you want the truth, I’ll give you the truth” (taken from the courtroom scene of “A Few God Men”).

    My groupthink comment did not apply to all who disagreed with me. It applies to those who chose not to have a discussion with me when they disagree. Rather, for them, it’s time to follow a script in portraying me as some type of crank. I don’t want to continue to feed this issue, so I’ll leave it at that. It’s really not a big deal.

  3. Benson, thanks for the reply. But I still have to push my question on the “groupthink.” I knew when I wrote my original question to you what you meant by groupthink. My question, however, still stands. Why is it groupthink that several people hold the same idea/belief that “this is Mr. B.’s blog, I have no right to criticize it.” I won’t get into whether or not such an idea is right or wrong, I simply want to know why that is groupthink as opposed to a belief held by several people.

    As far as your take on why this house was not BOTD, either you believe that MM is solely responsible for BOTD without input from Mr. B – that Mr. B doesn’t choose/wish to ‘direct’ her to particular homes/neighborhoods- or you don’t. I can’t and won’t try to change your mind on that.

  4. Or on the other hand he probably enjoys Montrose’s writing and take so much he told her to do what she liked. Get over yourself already. It’s sickening the way you go after Montrose. Get off everyone’s back already. It’s tiresome.

  5. Snappy, let me respond to your post, on several fronts:

    -I think I made it clear in my post to Slopey what my “groupthink” coment meant. It was not about folk’s opinion about this house one way or the other (you will note that I never offered an opinion about it). My comment was directed at those who take umbrage at my ocassional criticism of Mr. B. regarding this issue. I don’t get it. I think I was respectful and above board. Mr. B. and I have a cordial relationship – last week he and I exchanged a joke on a thread. He doesn’t strike me as a mama’s boy – if he felt that I was off the tracks, I’m sure he would have spoken up – and he’s done so in the past.

    -More on the groupthink issue – I really don’t get those who say that since this is Mr. B.’s blog, I have no right to criticize it. Huh? Do they believe that we should comment just to work the pom-pom’s? I think the site is ENHANCED by criticism. Mr. B. recently complemented me in another thread on my ability to generate discussion. Moreover, I made it clear that my criticism was meant in a constructive way.

    -I don’t buy the argument that the HOTD is Montrose’s beat, and so he needs to generate his own column to snark on Fedder’s. Mr. B. is the publisher of this site. He is ultimately responsible for its content. He simply could have asked Montrose to enlarge her scope to include these types of homes. Happens all the time in these types of situations (I am the editor of a quarterly newsletter for a charitable organization, and prior to each issue I have just such a chat with our president).

    -Finally, I agree with you that it was heartening that many did not take the bait to snark about this house in the ususal fashion.

    Thanks Snappy. I appreciate that you tried to see where I was coming from, rather than just ripping into me.

  6. Benson, for crying out loud, get a grip. You are making a mountain out of a molehill.

    Let’s get one thing straight, and thanks, Snappy. I am solely responsible for the BOTD. I choose what I run into and think is interesting, and post accordingly. Jon does not tell me what to choose or write, nor does he edit my content. The choices are determined by four things: 1)Getting a decent photo IN PERSON, not off the internet 2)Having some factual information available 3)Getting around to different places. Some places, like Greenwood Hts, I haven’t really gotten to. I’ll get there eventually. 4)My personal choices. The latter is the point here, I choose a cross section of buildings from as much of Brownstone Brooklyn as I have been able to photograph, thus far, and no one has objected to anything I’ve put on the BOTD, but it is MY choice, and mine alone.

  7. Wow- never a dull moment. Honestly benson- what a crock. You can post your opinion all you want. The fact that Mr. B has not banned you should tell you he agrees. Why you keep trying to start fights, and insult everyone, especially those like arkady who replied politely says far more about you than anyone else. You see insults and slurs everywhere, which is why you went after Biff the other day ( yet another in a long line of personal slaps at other people for some perceived infraction of YOUR rules). But you complain about “the hall monitors.” You don’t get more hypocritical

    And, in yet another plug for freedom of speech, Mr. B is also entitled to his opinion on taste (especially on his own blog!). He found the renovation strange. So? By its nature, a blog is someone’s personal viewpoint. Anyone can set up a blog and post whatever they want. And edit however they want. Read my lips- it’s Jon’s Blog. You refuse to get this. No one is going to ask Jon to ban you- you’re doing a great job of marginalizing yourself, however. Way to go.
