On the same block as yesterday’s supersized makeover and the now-infamous Tile House sits another facelifted architectural wonder some in the neighborhood have taken to calling the Goth House, perhaps because of the Gothic-style iron work, the castle-like brick work and, yes, the dragons affixed to the facade. You can’t make this stuff up! Update: Denton just sent in a photo he had lying around of the Goth House on Halloween. It’s posted on the jump. GMAP

  1. Benson, let me ask you something….

    If a thread appeared about the homeless man you mentioned, would you be satisfied? Are you saying that story should have been a thread instead of this one?

    Assuming arguendo (can’t take the lawyer outta the girl!) that Mr. B did in fact intend to get a thread full of snark about this house, do you not see how it is at the very least commendable that the above posters did not take what you see as the bait? I would think that you would quite pleased to see that happen. I don’t doubt that this “Freaky Friday” is a new spin on “Horror Show Friday,” but that doesn’t take away from the fact that the invitation for derision was not accepted.

    And as far as why this house was not simply made “Building of the Day,” I think the answer is entirely elementary – BOTD is a feature done by MM on houses *she* finds whereas “Freaky Friday,” “Horror Show Friday,” or whatever else Mr. B wants to call it is a discovery by Mr. B himself or the product of what tipsters send to him.

    Finally, I take exception to the fact that when people agree on something that you don’t, you reduce it to “groupthink.” Why is it so difficult to understand that maybe many people have the same idea or belief? Are your opinions and ideals that are widely held by others in the world mere “groupthink” because lots of people agree with you?

    If you choose to respond, I ask that you really think about and really read what I have written. This is not meant as an attack upon you, but instead an honest and genuine attempt to try to understand where you are coming from.

  2. Arkady;

    One more point. East NY said that he understood where I was coming from on this issue, as did Dirty Hipster. I was not the sole dissenting voice.

    I suggest that you take more time to read the thread carefully.

    Have a good weekend.

  3. Arkady;

    WOW!!! Do you really believe that??? Hey, I’ll buy you a pair of pom-poms then!! I’ve learned something: go with the flow, baby!!

    Slopey;

    I was thinking more about this issue this morning, and I want to ask you something. Let’s take a look at the description of the purpose of the “Building of the Day” feature, and I quote:

    “The BOTD is a no-frills look at interesting structures of all types and from all neighborhoods. There will be old, new, important, forgotten, public, private, good and bad. Whatever strikes our fancy. We hope you enjoy.”

    Given this description, I’m curious as to why this home wasn’t just featured as a Building of the Day. If it were part of that series, then I would buy your argument. Rather, he makes a point of putting it in a post called “Freaky Friday” and talks about how “You can’t make this stuff up!”.

    You sincerely expect me to believe that he was not inviting class-based snark and derision with this post?

  4. Given the unanimity of support for Mr. B & the wide-ranging expression of incomprehension about the sole dissenting voice, I’d think the logical conclusion would be that Mr. B knows what he’s doing & does it well.

  5. Big Bob;

    Nor do I give it that significance. It’s sort of like my hobby!

    I am a Brooklyn-o-phile, however, and I do wish there WAS a voice on the scene (for our borough) that had some perspective. Mr. B. has that potential, but sometimes he can’t resist staring at his navel. I feel the need to smack him in the back of his head when he does so (as a friend, of course).

    Have a good weekend.

  6. Just got back from seeing this place in person. I spoke with the owner, who happened to be outside. Very nice man! The house is absolutely stunning up close. You all should really go see it for yourselves.

    Oh, and the so-called “Tile House”…THAT IS NOT BATHROOM TILE. You should go look at that, too. Instead, it appears to be some type of stone veneer that comes in sheets.
