A true tipster is born: Brownstoner regular Biff Champion sent in his second tip after checking out the “Water-on-the-Go” program this weekend, a new initiative that is making NYC water more accessible at outdoor public locations. The six fountains are hooked up to fire hydrants and are staffed by volunteers. This location was at Pier Six and is also set up Tuesdays at the Borough Hall Greenmarket.

  1. tybur6, I agree with you completely. One of my only complaints about Pier 6 is that, while there are two or three drinking fountains, the one in the slide area has had a drainage issue from the start and the water pressure on all of them is awful. I’m surprised they didn’t build more durable/powerful fountains given the amount of people who go there.

  2. Yeah, I think the promoting of tap water is a great thing… but it really needs to be coupled with making sure the city’s drinking fountains are clean (i.e., inviting) and fully functional (i.e., not just dribbling).

It’s like promoting Coke but not making sure it’s available in stores.

  3. “the water pressure from the hydrant wasn’t strong enough”

This would concern me a lot more if I was a nearby homeowner (or barowner) and had a fire!

(I realize you’re talking to Denton, who isn’t “here” actually, but that’s neither here nor there, Harvey, but I was just going to say not a bad pic considering it’s from your shoe phone.)

  4. Yes, denton, I know the picture quality doesn’t meet your high standards, but what do you expect from my lousy Blackberry camera?

Anyway, I think the concept of the “Water-on-the-Go” program is excellent. And the staff working the fountains were extremely friendly and made some great, albeit obvious points about why we should use drinking fountains and carry reusable drinking containers versus continually using plastic water bottles. Only issue was that on our way home from Pier 6 when we passed by here again, the water pressure from the hydrant wasn’t strong enough and thus the fountains weren’t working. Hopefully they fixed that problem relatively quickly.
