A true tipster is born: Brownstoner regular Biff Champion sent in his second tip after checking out the “Water-on-the-Go” program this weekend, a new initiative that is making NYC water more accessible at outdoor public locations. The six fountains are hooked up to fire hydrants and are staffed by volunteers. This location was at Pier Six and is also set up Tuesdays at the Borough Hall Greenmarket.

  1. So the guy in the middle is explaining to the guy on the left – if you want water you press the lever.

    In addition, the guy sitting down in the background appears to be holding up the marquee’s fourth pole which appears too short.

  2. i pretty much only drink tap water. except at work. but at home straight from the tap. it tastes really good. i think nj has better tasting water tho. i dont know if it’s better, but it always tasted better to me.

  3. Thanks tybur6 and 1910. I assumed hydrant water would need filtering but am far from an expert on the topic. I learn something new every day. But I do drink NYC tap water regularly (and look how normal I turned out).

    I really wish people would try to limit, if not totally eliminate, their consumption of water from plastic bottles.

    What’s great about filters is that folks wait too long to replace the carbon cartridges and you end up with a pass-through situation anyway. It just takes longer for the water to go through. Also, a standard carbon filter’s (limited) ability to reduce heavy metals is the first capability to go…
