A true tipster is born: Brownstoner regular Biff Champion sent in his second tip after checking out the “Water-on-the-Go” program this weekend, a new initiative that is making NYC water more accessible at outdoor public locations. The six fountains are hooked up to fire hydrants and are staffed by volunteers. This location was at Pier Six and is also set up Tuesdays at the Borough Hall Greenmarket.

  1. It’s not going through a filtering system. Filtering is not necessary. And would be counter to the whole campaign!

I’m sure fire hydrant are just as clean as any other source of water. They may need to flush the hydrant for a minute or two.

  2. Pink Clamm, that’s funny, but these are temporary fountains to promote the use of tap water consumption and they are packed up and taken to different locations each weekend. They are manned (personned?) at all times by the government employees like the ones in the picture and don’t stay overnight.

  3. Call me picky, but first thing i thought was “great! some homeless person will be bathing in it when i want to drink”.Or someone will be smiling with glee as their dog with muddy paws and all just laps away. And they’ll wonder why the hell i’m pissed off, because of course their dog is clean.Ack!
