A true tipster is born: Brownstoner regular Biff Champion sent in his second tip after checking out the “Water-on-the-Go” program this weekend, a new initiative that is making NYC water more accessible at outdoor public locations. The six fountains are hooked up to fire hydrants and are staffed by volunteers. This location was at Pier Six and is also set up Tuesdays at the Borough Hall Greenmarket.
Better a true tipster is born than a true hipster.
1910, years ago friends outside of Syracuse had sulfur water.
I have a lead pipe feeding my house.
Col. Mustard with the lead pipe, in the parlour.
Thanks Mr. Champion That’s reassuring as the sight of a man who parked his bike, jumped a fence and was bathing in the waterfall made pond at Prospect Park friday erased all hope in safe public waters.
And my Aunt Upstate’s house had a major sulfur vein close to the water table. Other neighbors called in the Culligan Man. She ignored. Hence my blonde cousins always had a green tinge to their hair. NYC and Long Island relatives would bring their own TAP WATER from home to mix with whiskey and cocktails during holdiay events.
and as for the dogs pissing on them they replace the head to tap into the water for the fountains- the problem with the pressure was tap not the system.
most of the lead pipes have been replaced. Also NY adds an additive to the water to coat lead pipes so that the water doesn’t come in contact with them and leach the lead out. You can read about this at http://www.nyc.gov/dep
also the water in the hydrant is the same as your tap as Tybur6 also reports
Almost all the hydrants have been completely replaced so that they are tied in differently than the old one were(you no longer get a gusher when the hydrant is broken off by a car or truck and you can see the pipe then is iron(it rusts).
Yes again. I grew up in a house with it’s own spring well and one time a rodent took a swim and expired in it. You would definitely know if that happened.
Smelling funky? Just google water quality testing or something like that. You could have a dead squirrel in your cistern.
This from DEP says to let water run 2-3 minutes if you see rust (and dump the water on your plants to not waste)
