MM, it’s not like a certain almost-15-year-old volunteered go to out there with the shovel. Although if BSM was hopelessly snowed in this morning, I was going to volunteer her.
Gem, I admit it was off the charts stupid. It is embarrassing. No there was no blacktop showing on the BQE. Not only that, there was NO VISIBILITY beyond a couple of feet and my wipers kept getting clumps of ice. I was driving into the wind (north) and it was really dangerous. I got off at 38th Street and 4th avenue had snow on it but at least I could see, the buildings cut the wind.

Denton – serious? hmmmm I will tell my husband that – he would be thrilled – ha!!!!
may I ask where do you get your bmw’s serviced? or are you still bringing it to the dealer? we need a mechanic(need shocks BADLY) and we can’t afford the dealer at this point and need a solid mechanic who can do bmws…
Well, back in from shovelling snow.(an hour or so ago actually). The snow was drifted up against my bottom gate 4 feet high. Plus it had drifted into the entryway under the steps. I had to shovel it out of the way to open the gate, then shovel my way out of the stairwell. It was pretty much 3′ of snow all the way. The Sainted Tenant helped, and a neighbor who often does odd jobs for me helped, too. I’m very picky about my sidewalk trails. People had made a trail out near the curb, but I like to clear a path right up next to my fence out at least 3 or 4 feet. I don’t like tiny shovel wide paths through the snow. My neighbor thought I was nuts, when I insisted on plowing through virgin 3′ drifts instead of going where people had been walking.
Nostrand has barely been plowed. NY Ave not at all, so no buses were running. We were watching some idiot across the street digging their car out like they were going somewhere. My street hasn’t seen a plow yet, and the only vehicle that could have gone through there would have been a snowmobile.
My next door neighbor has a snowblower. If he (the father) is out there, he always plows my sidewalk, at least one pass down the middle. His son never does. Guess who was out there today?
just on, the corner of 5th ave and one of the named streets north of 1st street. some guy totally nasally yelling at people saying “we just spent all day clearing off the sidewalk!!!!” um, dude, do you even see who you are yelling at!?!? an AMBULANCE trying to get out of the snow :-/ wtf is wrong with people? it’s an ambulance! i wanted to walk right up to him and smack him across the face it was that obnoxious

G10, in a AWD car you have frictional losses from the add’l differential and stuff, plus extra weight (200lbs in my car) so 1mpg less. But AWD in a car is like carrying a gun in a bodega, you hardly ever need it but when you need it, you really need it.

Dona – were the highways and bridge even clear (blacktop) or were they just a fluffy mess? i cannot BELIEVE you crossed over the Verranzanno during that storm
Cobble, coming back had to be pretty terrible, but then going out in that not such a good idea. I wound up driving back from Staten Island from 5 pm to 6:45, one of the dumbest things I have done in a long time. I should have blown off a holiday invitation but instead went even though it meant driving back in an accelerating storm.
Highlight of the trip back….after making it over the Verrazanno…and partially on the BQE (nightmare) I pulled off to 4th Ave, then to Dean then Vanderbilt. On Vanderbilt near Fulton, some neighborhood kids were tossing a football from the sidewalk to the middle of the street. One of them slipped in the snow on Vanderbilt and thought it would be funny to drop into the street and lay down in front of an oncoming car. Which couldn’t really stop and almost ran over him…..
all this audi and bmw talk is kinda barf worthy. i thought you all were “middle class” :-/
