Denton – thanks I know all about bmw’s – it was audi that I didn’t know had standard AWD on all it’s vehicles
you can get all BMW’s in X -but again it is a choice and I have heard from bmw drivers it’s just ok and oddly uses up more gas….. so most likely if I ever get a real job again and can purchase a new or certified bmw I probably wouldn’t get X. But like you said – it’s a ground clearance issue and with the 3 you have more clearance than we do with our 5. I owned a 3 and loved it in the snow. I hate the 5 in the snow – ugh!
bmw has decided to bring a front wheel drive car to the US, which they claimed they never would. But they did some kind of survey that showed 70% of BMW owners think their car is FWD anyway. Asshats!
Gem,Yes, it was last night: 10:30pm. Well, it’s all self-inflicted, me thinks, shouldn’t have gone out in a MF BLIZZARD! It’s a long story, and I’m slightly annoyed, mainly because it was self-inflicted. Let’s just say this person isn’t very good at taking care of themselves at times, and hasn’t dealt with a real snow storm in quite sometime.
“Bobjohn – We have a bmw 5 and it’s crap in the snow – we are kicking ourselves for never buying snow tires – audi 6 is probably just as bad as it’s rear wheel drive as well – so if you can – get snow tires and have the dealer put them on for you in October and take them off in march”
G10, you are confused… Audi insists on AWD on all but the lowest end A4 and considers it a performance feature. Audi has much more of a background in rallying… BMW considers it not a performance feature but begrudgingly offered it as a option for snow assist. Lately BMW realizes Audi is more correct so now calls it X-Drive and even offers it on new 7 series.
However the snow tire vs. the AWD debate is as old as the Mac vs. PC debate. And of course no reason you can’t put 4 snows on steel wheels for the winter on an AWD car.
My last car was Audi A6 2.7t now BMW 328xi both AWD, and I’ve never came anywhere near being stuck in either. But in snow like this it’s mainly a ground clearance issue not a tire issue.
And I believe studded tires illegal most places, they’re bad for the roads.
Loved that Audi vid, the Germans are truly sick, with that kind of stuff.
CH – yeah, don’t venture out today – wait until tomorrow. Omg, why did your guest have a panic attack? awww – was that last night the person was trying to get back to you? yep, lots of cars stuck all over.
I have a guardian angel–went out to shovel and someone shoveled an 18-inch-wide path on the solid foot of snow on the steps and sidewalk. I sprinkled salt on the sidewalk of the most likely suspects since it’s still blowing around and slippery.
The van is plowed in solid. Good thing I don’t have to go anywhere!
RF – wow that was nice of your neighbor! are you using a salt shaker? i keed, I keed
CH-ah, I see…. well than sorta served them right to get stuck.
