  1. rob, what some people don’t get is that owning a German car for a long time can actually be cheaper than owning another marque. You can easily get 200k miles out of one, and they don’t depreciate to nothing.

I’ve often mentioned that I am completely disgusted at the decline of American manufacturing and the inability of Americans to see that.

I bought nothing but American cars for years and years until I got fucked one time too often.

Now I buy German cars that are union made by craftsmen who are better paid than their American counterparts.

  2. rob, smoking fills *dopamine* receptors in the brain. that is why people crave it beyond knowing it isn’t okay, even people on oxygen tanks. it makes them feel good. you probably know all of this anyway, having studied psychology. wellbutrin, which you have, is the anti-depressant that fills the dopamine receptors and that is why it is recc. for stopping smoking.

from my experience I don’t see people making great changes until lives are threatened. good luck though. much good advice here. when i stopped smoking i wrote notes to myself and left them on dressers, etc.. the best note i wrote to myself was, “stopping smoking is hard”. i would see that note and say, “oh, yeah”. i didn’t take anything, though, and yes, gained weight. dopamine (lack of) is a pesky thing, I think, and causes all kinds of problems.

  3. Gem, try my guys, Lee’s Auto Service, corner Smith and 3rd Sts., right by the Carroll St. stop on the F and G. If they can’t do it, they will tell you–they are totally aboveboard. Only open M-F, 9-5 but you can leave the car and they will talk to you before they do anything. The one thing Lechacal and I agree about!

  4. Just back in from picture taking. It’s a real mess out there. 5th Ave in the 20s looks like they are filming a remake of REM’s video to ‘Everybody Hurts’ (anyone remember that?). Lots of folks have abandoned their cars and are walking away. A snow plow was stuck on 6th Avenue, having crashed into a car. Eeeks.

  5. gemini10,
I would not get into details of drag racing. And despite my fanatic believe in AWD, I think RWD would do better on straight dry road.

about mechanics. for my old Audi I took it to dealership until they screwed up badly with the brake hoses. After this I used russian shop on McDonalds ave. (Ice Auto). They do good job on complicated systems.
If you just need to replace shocks (I would guess McPearson), it is not that complex and any shop can do it. Chinese at Sun Auto (7th ave and 65th st) are very cheap and reliable. They are pretty famous and always have big line of cars near by. Two weeks ago I saw Lambo sitting next to the shop.
I only took my old Audi there. The new car only had minor issues, which I was able to fix myself with help from audiworld.com
