It may not be totally representative since Facebook users tend to skew younger, but membership in the pro-bike lane group is dominating that in the anti-bike lane camp. More details on Streetsblog.

  1. I’m anti bike, but the PPW project actually seems like one of the better conceived bike lanes–still plenty of lanes to handle car traffic and bikes safely segregated. What drives me crazy are the bike “lanes” where there’s barely enough room for a car.

  2. fsrq – I would also invite you and all of your brethren to ride a bike around the city for a week or two. Commute, run errands, etc. as your primary vehicle. The report back your wonderful experience….

OR, wait, is a bicycle not even a valid mode of transport?

Do the 9 million people in NYC pay to maintain the roads *only* for the 1.8 million cars? (many of which are from NJ and Long Island)

  3. fsrq — funny how your personal, selfish perspective enhances your generalization.

I bike, drive and walk — almost 1/3 each. Pedestrians in this city are as bad as the rest… but who would admit that? Where do 99% of Brooklyn pedestrians wait to cross the street? IN THE ROAD. This is dangerous for EVERYONE and makes traffic move slower, makes taking a *right* turn difficult… and, yeah, makes biking especially dangerous. (The choice is either moving in front of the multi-ton car bearing down on you OR hitting the pedestrian that is STANDING IN THE ROAD.)

But AGAIN — I don’t give a crap about bikes in the situation. My comment was about TRAFFIC PATTERNS. And the PPW bike lane was 70% traffic calming 30% bike lane. The DISGUST was already in full swing with the idea that the damn superhighway was reduced to a residential street!

  4. tybur6 – “BUT I’m also not sure where all of the disgust comes from?”

Really? Let me spell it you for you – most bikers are dicks – they ride around with a fucking chip on their shoulder like they are environmental saviors (or something) and everyone else is destroying the world and is in their way. They obey virtually NO traffic laws (apparently believing that they individually can decide the best way to ride) yet often they literally stop and confront every other road user for every perceived infraction they spot. And they’ll sue at the drop of water bottle on each and every encounter where they can collect against the evil “Car drivers” because regardless of whose “fault” it is, they are just riding a defenseless bicycle.

And lest you argue that this arrogant aggressiveness is necessary to survive the mean streets of NYC against bigger and meaner autos and trucks, take a look at how bikers behave i spots where THEY are the biggest meanest vehicles – i.e. Parks, sidewalks and most glaringly the Brooklyn Bridge – they act EVEN MORE aggressive, more arrogant and in a reckless manor that if the average automobile drive displayed there would be dead bodies every other block.

Yes I know t above is a generalization – but I am afraid that it is a generalization that is accurate for a large majority of your biking brethren.

  5. bivouac – I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but I can tell you that the asshole minivans drivers in the park each even honking and driving at 50 mph between lights ARE a menace. They would rather run you down than yield to anyone (bike, pedestrian or other cars).
