It may not be totally representative since Facebook users tend to skew younger, but membership in the pro-bike lane group is dominating that in the anti-bike lane camp. More details on Streetsblog.

  1. “when trucks and car service folks are double parked (which happens all day long) then you create a boondoggle with the traffic moving to one lane. this is not shortsighted, convenient or limited thinking.”

sounds like your beef is with people who double park.

  2. 11217 think about what you just said. theres a bike lane and a parked car lane and two drivable lanes. when they plow the driving lane it will go up against the parked car lane therefore bringing it to one drivable lane. they are NOT plowing the bike lane..or at least i would be very surprised if they did. so that now means the parked cars will have to shovel from the drivers side onto the bike lane AND the passenger side onto the ONE GODDAMN lane that will be for the drivers…this was not asinine and now i can’t wait till winter.

  3. im not tunnel visioned and this is not an example of one or two. i live along PPW and i am out and about all day long. this is constant. to ride down PPW on your bike and ignoring traffic lights or pedestrians trying to cross the street is NOT their right. pedestrians are NOT standing in the bike lane. there are little islands that were created so folks can navigate their way across the street. it’s like playing froggie or super mario sometimes. when trucks and car service folks are double parked (which happens all day long) then you create a boondoggle with the traffic moving to one lane. this is not shortsighted, convenient or limited thinking.

  4. I love all the asinine comments. Especially this one:

“can’t wait for the snow…gonna be a disaster when they go to plow”

Because it’s never a disaster when cars/snow plowing is involved.

Stupid. Plowing a bike line is simple…nothing parked to get in the way…clean pass down the street and it’s done.

And the only person I know not on facebook is my mom.

  5. oohlala — with the exception of the cars still racing, I think your over the same ‘school of thought’ as fsrq. You see a couple examples and it becomes a huge problem. Who cares if bikes are riding on PPW?! They have a right. And guess what, they probably want to ride faster… and NOT stop at the pedestrian crossings.

Now, as for not stopping (though, i believe the signs say “Yield”) for pedestrians… When there is a “No Walk” signal, why are the pedestrians leaving the sidewalk anyway? Why are they standing IN the bike lane?

Again — don’t get all tunnel visioned and think of ALL of the contributing problems — not just the ones that you have conveniently chosen to focus on!

  6. cars still racing, bikers still on sidewalk or riding down the middlw of PPW. bikers don’t stop for pedestrians even with signs reminding them to do so. as far as i’m concerned it’s a lose/lose. can’t wait for the snow…gonna be a disaster when they go to plow

  7. Woody — Where are these?

There are no fully segregated bike lanes in his city where the cars don’t have space. If there are PAINTED lanes, these hardly crowd the cars. What a painted lane DOES do is points out that when a bike is present, the car must stay to the correct side of the line (and brings ATTENTION to the fact that bikes *may* be present. What is wrong with that? If there are no bikes present, then “leak” into the bike lane…

FSRQ — That is REALLY funny. Pedestrians are a protected class. I guess that’s why there aren’t any rules for pedestrians, right?

I never said there was an excuse for being an asshole — I’m just pointing out that you are only SEEING bikers as assholes because you’ve allowed all of the other assholes to escape your tunnel vision perceptions. And, furthermore, you’ve decided to generalize from a subset (a minority… but I know, you perceive them as the majority).

  8. Pedestrians in this city are as bad as the rest… OF COURSE THEY ARE – but they are a protected class because they are totally vulnerable.

As for using a bike as your primary vehicle – I am sure it does suck – so dos driving a car in NYC and walking everywhere and the bus too, doesnt excuse being an asshole…and again, even in the Parks and other non-motorized areas – bikes are dicks.
