Prospect Park West Bike Lane Supporters Outnumber Foes 4 to 1 on Facebook
It may not be totally representative since Facebook users tend to skew younger, but membership in the pro-bike lane group is dominating that in the anti-bike lane camp. More details on Streetsblog.

Yes. I have embraced some of the newer technologies, despite being born in 1963. But as denton says, it’s not that big a deal. I try not to place too much importance on any one thing.
This is a win-win for everyone:
1. Drivers: Safer since speeds are reduced and bottle necks less likely to occur with less lane-changing.
2. Bikers: Obviously safer and allows for two-way, orderly traffic.
3. Pedestrians: Safer since cars are slower and bikes are off the sidewalks. More importantly, traffic calming…we are now 20 ft further from moving vehicles!
Next time you are walking and wagging your cane along PPW, stop and take a moment to realize the difference this has made.
I’ve said this about 300 times… it’s a TRAFFIC CALMING project. The DOT would never have had the support to do this if high speed, dangerous drivers weren’t an issue.
The bike lane is a byproduct.
If the NYPD enforced traffic laws, perhaps the DOT wouldn’t have to use mechanical interventions to make the roads safer…
As a regular biker, I don’t see the benefit of *some* of the bike lanes added to the streets… BUT I’m also not sure where all of the disgust comes from? It’s like any shift in traffic is treated as the destruction of society as we know it.
It would be fun if everyone took a *tiny* step back from their person, selfish concerns and looked at the bigger picture. What if this change on PPW means it takes you an extra minute to drive down the road? What if the road is actually full during peak times? What if the 2-lane configuration means you can’t drive at 55 mph down the road? What if this road becomes a RESIDENTIAL road, adjacent to a huge park with hundred or thousands (on the weekend) of pedestrians in and around this road… and not some sort of pseudo-parkway?
By the way, this “Fair Weather” argument is great… except for the fact that NYC has “fair weather” about 80% of the year.
Pete, asked you something on OT

I’m with you ENY. It’s software, not life.
“people are realizing that this traffic calming project is working well for everyone.” —does anyone seem calm to you whenever the subject of bikelanes is brought up here? I think valium sales are up though.

I’m on Facebook. But I tend to, you know, keep it all in perspective.
