184-kent-0525.jpgAll is not well apparently at 184 Kent…A tipster reports some tension between the management and the doormen and handymen at the recently-opened rental building. According to a flyer being handed out on the street outside the building this morning, two workers were sacked for trying to unionize building. “With luxury rentals advertised between $2,240 and $4,825 for a 2br, 184 Kent can afford to treat their workers better,” says the 32BJ-sponsored flyer.

  1. buttermilk – don’t be shocked that people will pay a lot of money to live in apt on the river that faces Manhattan. it’s very valuable to a lot of people, otherwise explain Dumbo! haha – 2 bridges, a highway and a massive housing project – yet big prices.

  2. I agree you cant fire on discriminatory basis. However firing for trying to unionize is not discriminatory. Creating a disruptive working enviornment, insubordination, etc. Think about what “Trying to Unionize” means.

Imagine you walk into your bosses office and say I demand a contract with X,Y,and Z, and by the way I’ve been talking to these guys who are going to make sure we get it.

Its called “At Will Employment” and your bosses will to employ you would probably end right there.

  3. Yes, it is illegal to fire anyone for any of the same reasons that you can’t discriminate in hiring. And yet how many times have people been fired, ostensibly for a more “legal” reason when in reality it was because the new boss didn’t like their race, age, religion, etc. That’s called wrongful dismissal, and many have sued successfully for the same.
