184-kent-0525.jpgAll is not well apparently at 184 Kent…A tipster reports some tension between the management and the doormen and handymen at the recently-opened rental building. According to a flyer being handed out on the street outside the building this morning, two workers were sacked for trying to unionize building. “With luxury rentals advertised between $2,240 and $4,825 for a 2br, 184 Kent can afford to treat their workers better,” says the 32BJ-sponsored flyer.

  1. Sorry if I ruffle any feathers, but being in the hotel union, all I can say the union is good for is protecting the people who suck at their jobs and don’t want to work. I’ve been in the same place and watched my co-workers rally to unionize successfully, then watch their work ethic go to hell afterwards as management can really do nothing unless they’re caught drinking, stealing, or sleeping on the job. These guys should be grateful to have a job. And union health care kinda sucks btw.

  2. dont blame the union. hate the no-balls mgt who bend over all the time.

in this case, mgt told these 2 to F off.

are the renters happy, sad, or indifferent? would unionized staff mean bigger rent hikes, better service, or no change?

  3. Unions. UTW (transit workers)

Took a huge raise over the next three years a couple of months ago.

Rather than take a modest pay cut in a huge recession they let several hundred of their “brethren” get laid off. Let there be massive cuts in service. Student Metro cards, handicapped, busses.

you go Norma Rae, while I wait 30 minutes for an express train! awesome.

  4. come tho think of it, does the city have a recycle plan for all the cfls they have installed throughout the city? how much does that cost? and if they break, are all city employees trained in what to do with all that toxic mercury? how much did the training cost? if a special cleanup crew is called as recommended, how much does that cost? And who is taking all the toxic cfls that need to be recycled? are they going into a land fill? future Love Canal? just sayin…

  5. Unions are desperate. Take a look at the card check legislation. They want to do away with the secret ballot to unionize. WTF? Do away with the secret ballot?? But only to unionize, if De-unionize – they insist on secret ballot. They also want to do away with the 51% of employee votes needed to unionize. Now they want only 50% of those voting. WTF??

The scariest of all. Emerald Cities. For those who are following the “Green movement” – check this out. These people are spending a lot to influence State and Federal legislation of “upgrading existing facilities” and potentially your home.

Look at the people who make up the board of directors! Scary bunch.

Adds some credibility to the global warming bs theory.

to all this I say, Unions are going to be the demise of our economy.

…and down with CFLs. They suck, are toxic and expensive to produce, have to be left on for 15 minutes to warm up???. I know this is off topic, but I really hate them.

  6. “[J]oining a union has become a dangerous undertaking. Over eight thousand employees are fired every year simply for trying to join one. Technically, this kind of firing is illegal, but the penalties are so trivial that employers just pay the fines and keep breaking the law.”

  7. “How long do you think it will take to train a new doorman and concierge??? Will it be shorter than training a barista???”

somewhere in between the time it takes to train a hedge fund manager and to train a monkey to throw darts at a dartboard. 😉
