Rental of the Week: 415 Van Brunt Street
Usually we’re a little surprised with the high rent throughout Red Hook, despite the lack of public transportation options. Usually we’re a little surprised with the high rent throughout Red Hook, despite the lack of public transportation options. But this apartment at 415 Van Brunt seems too good to be true: A no-fee, four room railroad style pad going for $1,500 $1,550 a month. The listing says it is a block away from Fairway, and the owner tells us it’s in a three-story multi-family building with five apartments. The details are nice, considering rentals this cheap usually are weak in that department. Hardwood floors and and a washer and dryer in the basement don’t hurt either. For a group of young people who don’t mind biking (or taking a nice long walk) to the subway, this is a steal. “I’ve had a lot of interest so maybe I priced it too low,” said the owner, who’s looking for a July 1 move in day. “Oh well.”
Cute Four Bedroom Railroad Apt. (Red Hook) [Craigslist] GMAP
“ummm, doesn’t a railroad mean there is NO hallway? ”
depending on how it’s set up – the apartment could have two seperate entrances – one in the ‘living room’ and one in the back bedroom. if that’s the case, typically the door between the two bedrooms is blocked off and the person with the seperate entrance uses the common hallway (technically outside the apt) to enter the living room. That was the set up I had when I was in a railroad.
ummm, doesn’t a railroad mean there is NO hallway?
railroad apt layout is fine – AS LONG AS there’s a true hallway vs. having to walk thru the rooms.
“”Railroad apt living with ‘a group of young people’ doesn’t sound all that appealing….” ”
I did it – it sucked.
The back of the building overlooks the notorious Ahava Dairy on Beard Street where a diesel generator runs 24/7 and trucks pull in and out all the time. Plus, the building is kind of ghetto
Thanks, guys. Made the corrections, and I think the price may have just been an initial typing error on my part.

It’s not supposed to. Not unless you’re a starry eyes youth.
I think the listing says 4 room railroad, not 4 bedrooms. So it’s probably only 2 bedrooms (maybe one if they’re counting the bathroom). Still a good deal.
