Rental of the Week: 415 Van Brunt Street

Usually we’re a little surprised with the high rent throughout Red Hook, despite the lack of public transportation options. But this apartment at 415 Van Brunt seems too good to be true: A no-fee, four room railroad style pad going for $1,500 $1,550 a month. The listing says it is a block away from Fairway, and the owner tells us it’s in a three-story multi-family building with five apartments. The details are nice, considering rentals this cheap usually are weak in that department. Hardwood floors and and a washer and dryer in the basement don’t hurt either. For a group of young people who don’t mind biking (or taking a nice long walk) to the subway, this is a steal. “I’ve had a lot of interest so maybe I priced it too low,” said the owner, who’s looking for a July 1 move in day. “Oh well.”

Oooo, vraiment? That is happy news, donatella! Although I guess husband will need a new barber. (And I hope this doesn’t take business away from excellent Michael Allen.)
That price for a 4-room RR apartment in Red Hook is ok, maybe just a touch better than ok, but not really worth whipping out the uncommon ‘Rental of the Week’. It’s not a buddy who’s renting it out, is it?
Heather, this is off topic, but I understand from DIBS that you have an intense interest in the same little strip of retail real estate as I do…..Fulton between Vanderbilt and Clinton-ish. The hair place (you-Niques)is being replaced with a French pastry chef’s shop. That was my happy news of the day…
If it is near Fairway, that is one hell of a “long walk to the subway”. That is the drawback with Redhook. I think that RedHook has a nice vibe (and LOVE the water), but unless you have a nearby business or work nearby or have a car, it is seriously challenged re: public transportation.
Also, duly noted for rents. My tenants have a serious DEAL.
I still dream about that apartment, more4, but it isn’t a railroad. It’s more like, classic walk-up apartment style? Designed for the middle class, not the poor.
When I first moved to the city my friend lived in an east village railroad where each roommate lived in one of the railroad rooms. The only common space was the kitchen. Which had the bathtub.
That’s a lot of money for an un-rehabilitated apartment that is close to Fairway, but NOTHING else…seriously, $1,550 for a 20-25 minute walk to the nearest subway (Smith-9th, of all places)? I paid that for a place around the block from the 4th Av station.
If this place is 1550 (and considered cheap!), I feel alot better about what I’m paying for my mortgage and common charges.
The building only has windows on the front and back, so the middle two rooms in this railroad apt would windowless. Plus its in Red Hook!
isnt railroad layout mean it’s a long unit where the rooms are one after the other vs something rectangular or square which allows for better flow btwn rooms?
DH, I consider my Crown Heights place a railroad layout and that it’s a good/ok layout since there’s a true hallway. only if wife was willing to move there. I would make that big dining room a play room for the kid and I wont hear his fussing while I watch football a few rooms away in the living room
“For a group of young people who don’t mind biking (or taking a nice long walk) to the subway”
Or the 12 minute bus ride, which is how most of us do it.
