Rental of the Week: 415 Van Brunt Street

Usually we’re a little surprised with the high rent throughout Red Hook, despite the lack of public transportation options. But this apartment at 415 Van Brunt seems too good to be true: A no-fee, four room railroad style pad going for $1,500 $1,550 a month. The listing says it is a block away from Fairway, and the owner tells us it’s in a three-story multi-family building with five apartments. The details are nice, considering rentals this cheap usually are weak in that department. Hardwood floors and and a washer and dryer in the basement don’t hurt either. For a group of young people who don’t mind biking (or taking a nice long walk) to the subway, this is a steal. “I’ve had a lot of interest so maybe I priced it too low,” said the owner, who’s looking for a July 1 move in day. “Oh well.”
Cute Four Bedroom Railroad Apt. (Red Hook) [Craigslist] GMAP
im proud to say that this was my first home in 1967
where i lived with my 5 siblings
all my happy childhood memories where in that apartment
the nieghbors where friendly and the hallway was clean and
quiet.
since then the building has been renovated, so the rooms must be biger.
it is a little far from places but we always took long walks to the park or to school. but we didnt mind we were kids.
every room has a special place in my heart.
and home is where your heart is.
its not the cost are distance. its where you find peace and happiness.
laughter and love will be found in this buitiful brownstone
its more than a building, its a home.
ok.
to reiterate for the 4th time in this comment thread: bus…
mere feet away…
One way goes to Smith-9th
Other way goes near Hoyt-Schermerhorn and Jay Street downtown.
Think of Red Hook as Bed Stuy… except without the trains nor the constant threat of random ultra-violence.
This building is far from ghetto. I’ve lived here in this building for a long time and it’s the nicest apartment I’ve lived in. Spacious and sunny with clean tubs, great hot water and shower pressure, warm in the winters. It is also well maintained. A good value for the neighborhood.
Anyway, this one sure is cute.
M4L, in NYC a railroad means the apartment has no interior hallway and you have to walk through one room to get to the other. Though as DH says, often all the rooms have doors into the public hallway, which makes it a little easier for roomies coming home late at night, etc. Another issue is that it’s not uncommon to find no doors between the rooms. So privacy and space are compromised.
They rent for much less than apartments with hallways, so don’t advertise your apartment as a railroad if it isn’t one.
Dreamking,
No, not a friend renting. The initial idea behind a rental of the week is to wade through the tons of crap on Craigslist, the sometimes huge broker fees, and a lot of the very unexciting apartments for too much money. This apartment looked like it had character and it isn’t at an unrealistic price for young people, students, etc. I also initially didn’t think the bathroom would be included in the room count, I may be wrong. Finally, I have a soft spot in my heart for Red Hook which I don’t expect everyone to share 🙂
I have seen this building in person, there is nothing around there. I wouldnt give it any more than 500. that is all it is worth.
I am happy too 🙂 I had figured that you must live pretty close. Delepp, I think too. And I know more4 does…
Heather, I am very happy to know you are my neighbor and care about that little strip. Come to the OT sometimes!!!
