Rental of the Day: 158 President Street
This top-floor rental at 158 President in Carroll Gardens isn’t really floating our boat. It’s a one-bedroom, one-bathroom, plus an awkward looking loft that appears to cut up the main living space. It seems like a bit of a stretch to be calling this place a duplex, as the broker does in the listing verbiage….

Thoughts?

Wow. It’s a bad idea horribly executed; a tiny little slot of a kitchen with your fridge out in the “living room”–I just cannot see anything to like about this place.
I’ll say it again: It is 3 1/2 blocks to an entrance to the Carroll stop of the F. Geez…
I used to live on this block. It really is a hike to the subway, especially in winter. It’s almost in Red Hook. Of course, then the apt would be worth even more.
It’s too close to the BQE and is noisy and filthy. Wild horses could not drag me here again. In 2001 to 2004, we paid $1850 for a one bed floor thru with tons more charm than this. The point of the loft is storage.
This is what a 1BR rents for in Carroll Gardens? Granted it’s 1BR + loft + den…but geez. I have a real 2BR on the UWS for less, and it’s bigger.
You don’t need luck. Been doing Carroll Gardens to Wall St for over 20 years. Living room to desk 25 minutes to Broadway and Wall. F 2 stops to A 2 stops.
The main knock on the F is the difficulty of transferring to any non-IND line. Good luck getting from Carroll Gardens to Prospect Heights. Or Wall Street.
DitmasSnark:
I lived on the F (7th Ave) for about 5 years. Long waits, and you gotta love the morning rush hours when they reroute to the G line after leaving Jay and the whole, overcrowded train has to get off at Hoyt/Schermerhorn and switch to the A, etc. The F is one of the worst for leaving you hanging.
I moved a couple of miles to BH, and started taking the 2/3 and I cut my commute to 34th St. in half. The 4/5 isn’t so bad, either (except when the 5 terminates at Bowling Green). The Q seems like a quick shot to Atlantic Ave., and I respect that.
People hate the R because it’s pokey, but I think of it as the tortoise: slow but steady (very rarely has the reroutes and nonsense the F has), usually has seats from Union Sq. to Brooklyn.
I live almost equidistant from the 2,3,4,5,M,R,A,C, and the F&G are about 1-2 minutes closer. I take the G a lot- to go to Williamsburg; and I take the F way more than all the others, because I like the way it runs up the center of Manhattan. I feel like, if I start at 6th Ave, it’s pretty easy to get anywhere I need, whether it’s east or west. Plus, the F is the only one that goes to the LES.
I have no real complaints about the F, at all. My local stop (Bergen) is clean and underground (better in the winter). I never understood the hate for the F, but I rarely go above 23rd street, so maybe that’s a factor?
> Yes, but the F sucks worse than most.
Ok, but it what specific ways does it suck more?
More crowded? Longer waits? Dumpier stations?
