This duplex, two-bedroom Boerum Hill rental at 114 Dean Street looks like a suitable spot for a family. Throw in the home office, big kitchen, and rather lovely backyard and it makes a nice package. $5,500 a month for 2,500 square feet of space also seems in line with area prices. Thoughts?

  1. WAIT?! Nomi… People making $300,000 have to pay taxes?! Shut up!

You do know that someone making $100,000 still has the SAME insurance premium as the person making $300,000, right?

This is my point — I’ve made it many times. Paying these ridiculous prices for real estate is HARMFUL to the greater society.

Regardless of that bigger point, THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS IS A SHIT LOAD OF MONEY!

Almost HALF of my take-home pay goes to my rent. You realize that’s crazy right? And my salary is what I would like to consider pretty decent…. but I’m a public employee, so most of you would probably characterize my salary as grossly exorbitant.

Don’t you think that the absolutely stupid people who are willing to pay $5500 per month for this sort of apartment have a direct and NEGATIVE effect on every single person who doesn’t share their Top-10% income?! The fact that this price tag is so absolutely divorced from any rational sense of value?! You don’t think that is harmful?

And do you honestly feel… honestly… that someone making $300,000 a year is just your run of the mill “middle class family”?!

  2. What’s really odd is that kitchen island. It looks like it’s a sit-down table level, rather than the standard counter height (24″) and with a sink in it to boot. You’d need a personal chiropractor after doing dishes after the nightly meal.

  3. “Nomi — $300k is most definitely GOBS and GOBS of money.” (ty)

Just to remind you: making three gobs means you’re going to take home well under two gobs.

Talk to someone who is raising two kids in Manhattan or an expensive part of Brooklyn on that and see if you still think it’s some grotesque amount of money. We ARE talking about how far a gob will take you HERE, right? Not where the majority of Americans live, right? So, we are talking about the RELATIVE worth of a gob, right?

  4. Bolder: If you are making $120K in NYC your take home is going to be about $72K, so I guess you would be okay as long as you didn’t need more than $500 per month for everything else.
