This two-bedroom rental at 148 Hancock Street in Bed Stuy has a nice prewar vibe and a decent amount of space; its proximity to the Nostrand A/C stop makes it easily accessible as well. On the negative side, it’s on the first floor and the monthly rent of $1,850 seems on the pricey side for 800 square feet in this part of town, especially if you’re also paying a broker’s fee. What do you think?

  1. I live on this block and have never seen this maybe inside this building but I have never seen bad behavior outside this building. Inside I not sure about. I know most of the tenants today are students and Europeans that are on short term lease. I do know this building had problems with rats in the past. I think you should have reported to landlord or even taken him to court for unsafe conditions… I feel that your saying this only happens in Bedford Stuyvesant and this type thing never happens in Manhattan? I have been in many buildings all over the city that had the same issue.

  2. Amzi Hill, Thank you for the architectural history lesson but this is not relevant to my personal experience living in this building. Let me be clear that I moved from this building less than two years ago and the traumatic experience still resinates. I am not criticizing Brooklyn, I am voicing my experience of how badly this building is managed. I moved to Bed-Stuy because of its easy train access and neighborhood flair. I don’t think any resident should live next to alcoholics or drug addicts/dealers that defecate on the stair wells, drink Colt 45s outside your apt. at 7am, and loiter in the lobby while using it as a trash receptacle. I also forgot to mention that my credit card was stolen when someone decided to break into my mailbox. All this being said, I guess if you appreciate great architecture and are willing to overlook some of the points that I mentioned above, then this is the apartment for you!

  3. ken85 your key words several years ago.. several years ago Ft. Greene and Prospect was a mess. I could not think of the architect of this building but it was Edward Betts in 1899 who did Building of the Day: 275 Clinton Avenue one of my favorite apartment buildings.

  4. Caution: I lived in this building several years ago and it was the worst living situation in the 8 years of me living in New York. The building was so terrible that it forced me to move into Manhattan because I was severely traumatized by the poor living conditions. I love Brooklyn, but this building is owned by a slumlord. I spent many restless nights in this building because Nostrand Ave is very loud and the building shook due to large trucks speeding by, in combination of Bed-Stuy ghetto rats who think screaming at the top of their lungs is OK. The building manager never told me that my next door neighbor was a raging alcoholic and taking out the garbage was frightful because of the rat problem lurking around the building.
You could not pay me to live in this building again and I caution anyone who step foot inside this atrocity.

  5. Acajou, if you have a duplex in this area for this price (hell, for a thousand more), please find a way to contact me.

I like this area a lot. I love the stores on Fulton. And the A-train.

  6. I admit this building has issues. The owners are not from the nabe and they seem to have a general lack of respect for us. We entered the greenest block in brookyn for this year and did receive and honarable mention. I spoke to the owner about his corner. We were willing to do the clean up and the planting, all he had to do was contribute to the cost of the plants (about $50.00) He was totally not receptive,
