  1. It’s not a legal bedroom (would have to be at least 80 sf, right?)
Brokers like that annoy me; just because you are not accountable doesn’t mean you have to insult your potential buyers’ intelligence.

  2. There’s a clear difference between monetizing the website, and offering a bias towards Marketplace advertiser’s, SPECIFICALLY in regard to Open House and HOTD picks.

I personally find it hard to imagine JB would “sell” open house picks. There’s too much downside to the Brownstoner Brand. Short term gain vs. decline in credibility. Having said that, a growing number of readers are uncertain.
So a clear policy statement from Brownstoner would go a long way.

Prior to the Marketplace’s existence this wasn’t an issue. But new features bring with them new problems to resolve.

  3. What’s the smallest “bedroom” you’ve seen on a floorplan?

The 16th st listing that Maly posted lists one at 5.5 X 7.5.
Heh, that’s 41 square ft!! I believe that’s some sorta record.

  4. Ny Guy7 — I think the issue is whether the brokers paid to be promted as OH picks — I doubt it, actually. Wasn’t there a non-marketplace link last week?

The site appears to link viewers first to the marketplace link if it exists, au naturale, which would be fine if the marketplace was a little more up to snuff — better photos and floor plans. Even if the site would just direct link to the broker’s floorplan, that’d be good.

Also, why do some listings have links to city records and other’s don’t? Also it would be nice to have links directly to GMap and Bing Maps from the Marketplace page.

  5. Personally, I don’t mind if he shills his marketplace listings, as long as they’re not completely lame and/or obscenely overpriced. The real problem is the decline in content quality.

  6. NYGuy7 –

From my observation, virtually everyday over the last two weeks somebody has complained in the Cotd or HotD about 1) they’re all marketplace listings, or 2) they’re marketplace listings but it wasn’t disclosed.

Not saying Jonathan Butler doesn’t have the right to run his for profit business in whatever manner he deems best. His dime, his call.

But it is disingenuous and hypocritical for him to call out other bloggers for lack of full disclosure.

  7. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is Brownstoner we’re talking about.

JB will never be a sellout like other blogs.

He will never become that which he once loathed.”

Where’s the sellout part? That entire link posted was criticizing bloggers who didn’t disclose they were getting paid write about some shit on their blog which apparently OTBKB wasn’t disclosing. There’s no secret here that any of the HOTD were paid to be promoted by the brokers.
