I bought a loft at 101 it isnt that nutty when the L train is 25 feet away.
Enough with the provincial comments – ParkSlope vs. BedStuy vs Bayridge vs. ClintonHill- already.
Any comments on the open houses? Or too glued to computer screen all weekend?
I went to the open house for 47 Plaza Street West. The building is gorgeous, having been designed by Rosario Candela, arguably the best prewar residental architect, whose work includes the best buildings along Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue in Manhattan. The apartment itself was lovely: 8 rooms, 24 windows with amazing views, and prewar details. The catch, I thought, was the high maintenance: $2,650 per month. I did not bid on it.
I agree with several posts. no 1, bay ridge enthusiast — it makes no sense to bash bs just because your neighborhood isn’t getting as much love its really not going to drive up the property value. ‘my friend lived in bedstuy and go his car broken into’ so what? my friend lived in bay ridge and got beat up by a gang of Italians every neighborhood has its negatives. FG used to be a sess pool of crime and look at it now. I tend to find areas like Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst homogoneous, I sincerely think that some people feel like these areas lack character as the homes are not old and beautiful with tons of details like in bedstuy.
as far as the comment ‘how do I get white people out of my neighborhood’ and the response of ‘how would you feel if that was said about black people’ even though this person was probably trying to be funny I think they touched on something very interesting. the truth is, it seems as though that’s exactly what people think. you say ‘what if people said run all the black people out of bk heights and park slope’ and to that I say THEY HAVE! that’s why these areas seem to be so popular I mean c’mon lets stop trying to be pc and call a spade a spade, its not until white people start moving in in droves and consider the neighborhood trendy, throw up a whole foods or something nifty that a neighborhood starts getting any love. yea, there are still black people in this area but the number is neglible, not to mention ignored. just like someone pointed out, there are white people, interracial couples and asian people in bedstuy but because it’s largely black that is ignored. this is the case with ps, bk heights, ch, fg etc etc … no one gives a damn about that neighborhood until white people move in and stamp it cool because I guess when white people move in the neighborhood is now safe and people’s cars don’t get broken into right? FG was one of the worse neighborhoods in bk, with fg projects right there but when the white people came and said hey these brownstones are nice! this is nice, and cheap, especially compared to manhattan it wasn’t a problem that the projects were so close now most of the black people who are left there are those who bought or moved in that area for the most part when the neighborhood was nothing. or don’t mind selling to the geniuses who are willing to pay 2 mil for their house and they can move to bs. now the same thing is happening in bs and people have the nerve to talk about yet they’ll be the same people wanting to kick jamal and tyrone out for lindsey and matt when the neighborhood turns around. get over yourselves.
Correction the Y is on Monroe! I can not seem to keep those two streets straight in my head!
We are fg migrants and have also come to love this neighborhood. Just joined the Y on Macon and can not wait until the new building project is done. We have been here for almost 3yrs and as my daughter loves that Bed-Stuy is a neighborhood with history and beautiful buildings and was proud to say including her new home in a school project when we first arrived. The majority of her classmates live in Bklyn Heights & Cobble Hill. “An Architectual Guide to Brooklyn” sits on our coffee table and often we look through it just in awe of the historical aspects of the housing in Bed-Stuy. I say yes, come restore, rebuild and rejuvinate the pride and splendor that Bed-Stuy once had!
When I was re-financing my home in Bed Stuy and wanted to take money out for restoration, I was initially turned down because the comps did not match the money I wanted. However, when the bank did an in person appraisal, I had no problem because of the obvious beauty of my home once we completed the planned work (original details galore). It’s the type of generalization found here and redlining that caused the great decline of Bed Stuy to begin with. Let’s just stop putting down “other” neighborhoods. Sometimes you cannot judge the instrinsic value of a house until you see it and the block it’s on.
As a former FG resident who sold for a nice profit, I am very happy for FG and CH. Unlike others, I have no problem with the migration from Manhattan, but there is no need to put down another neighborhood to feel better about yours. When I initially moved to FG, it was what Bed Stuy is now or worse.
To my fellow Bed Stuy residents, keep you head up, restore, rejuvinate and re-invest. Also,we know Stuy Heights is in Bed Stuy (albeit and “enclave” within the neigborhood):).
To one of you anonymouses…
I was driving around Bay Ridge last week with a friend who’s looking to buy, and the housing stock is just not the beautiful old structures in Bed Stuy and PS and CH et al. That’s one enormous difference.
have people just not figured out that you don’t have to put an email address to have a screen name? you can still be retain your privacy and it would make it a heck of a lot easier to follow along….
try it, you’ll like it!
