johnife,
I’ve lived on a bunch of blocks with “stickball playing kids.” 12th b/w 6/7 was different. Not just the kids. back in the late 80s/early 90s, an unbelieveable bunch of loudmouth grownups and kids, parents who couldn’t walk half a block to call their kids home but would just yell louder and louder for half an hour, several guys with a curbside custom car audio installation business testing their wares 24/7, you name it. Many times I would be woken up at 2-3 am(from a back of the house bedroom) by the street noise and if I even looked out the window to see what the commotion was, a bunch of folks would see me and yell up “don’t you dare call the cops you @#$%’n yuppie!” and other nice things to that effect. I’m still in S. Slope and downslope and don’t need an anti-septic vibe, but that block was really unbearable at times. I believe many, but not all, of the same families are still there, but I imagine there is a new genertion of kids.
Amzi, do you have a lead on a good local stripper here in Bed Stuy? I’ve got quite a few things left to strip
Before I moved from Ansonia Court (at 7th & 12th) about 14 years ago, we were plagued by the presence of a crack house on 13th Street just South of 7th (owned by grandma who ceded the run of the house to her gangster son or grandson). Our apartment was on the ground floor facing 7th and we used to see guys right outside our windows steering patrons to the place. The cops eventually shut it down. Never felt there was a problem with the kids on 12th between 6th & 7th though. I always regarded the street stickball and other high jinks as reflective of a close-knit community which I always regarded as a good thing. I guess folks these days think antiseptic, quiet, orderliness is the definition of a desirable neighborhood.
mopar – whew! that’s for clarifying that for me. i was getting really worried especially since we don’t have an en suite master bath in our home! 😉
expert – i totally agree with you about living, dining & kitchen on one floor. i have debated this with friends that have them broken up over 2 floors – who wants to carry food up & downstairs? we entertain alot and can’t imagine going back and forth. i guess if you want a 2 family this wouldn’t work for you. i do like it as a one family though.
On second thought, it could’ve been well over 10 years ago. Like early 90s?
G10, There were drug dealers on that block about 10 years ago. What else do you want to know?
Also, my next door neighbor on 15th, but we got his ass out of there! (circa 2001)
Amzi, do you have a lead on a good reliable paint stripper in Bed Stuy. I’ve got plenty of stuff to strip
“PS: Anyone remember the drug dealers on 12th & 6th? I’m going back about 10 years.
RH: no, but do tell….
Enough with the blue! It can be stripped or repainted.
We just got back from visiting the mother in law in Ireland. Talk about open showers being all the rage over there. Yup, everybody is installing them. We used her brand new en suite bath for the first time. Hated it. I had to stand all the way over by the toilet to keep my feet dry, but how sanitary is that when you guys can’t aim properly? The water did spray all over…on her wood molding, near the wood floors in the bedroom, on the dry towels. I give that bathroom 6 months before it gets all moldy.
