If you’re a troll or a spammer, you better try to get your last licks in now, because by Monday, the guest commenting function will be a thing of the past on Brownstoner. If you haven’t signed up for a user account yet, please try to do so in the next couple of days. (If you don’t receive your verification email within a couple of minutes, just email us and we’ll verify you by hand.) If you already have a user account and voted for the elimination of guest commenting, please put your money where your mouth is and make an effort to get involved in discussions. Another to remember is that you are still anonymous when you comment with a username: Just pick a silly name like Cobble Hill Guy and stick with it; no other readers will be able to see your email address or know who you really are. Our hope and expectation is that the improved quality of the threadsalong with our ability to boot anyone who steps out of boundswill more than make up for any decline in the quantity of comments.
We know that there are a lot of long-time readers out there who’ve gradually been moving to the sidelines of the discussions as they’ve grown nastier and more inane, and hopefully they will take this as an opportunity to re-engage and take the sense of community back to its roots where we can have meaningful, useful discussions about real estate, architecture and the many issues that confront the borough and its neighborhoods as the inevitable wheels of change continue to turn.
There are going to be a number of new features coming to the site in the next few months, the use of which will also be enhanced by having a user account. The first of these, launching next week, involves a group effort at building a comprehensive restaurant guide for the borough. (Having a username is particularly useful because other readers can come to trust, or distrust, you opinions about restaurants.) Other features down the pipe include map-based mobile access of the Brownstoner archives, neighborhood emails and some new service-oriented improvements in the architect and contractor spaces.
LOL – internet harrassment on a site that YOU, bxgrl, have to personally point your browser to?
you just can’t stop coming back for more, can you?
I only sound like one- you are one.
And there is such a thing as internet harassment. Maybe you should research a little before you post? Oh wait- my mistake. that would mean you had some intelligence.
Mr. B–I approve. I’ve been following Brownstoner for quite some time, posting occasionally (5-6 times tops) as a guest. I like the information, the pictures, the links to other things Brooklyn. I love the exciting discussions, but since last summer there are fewer of them and more outright dismissals of the comments of others due to disagreement. What is this: the cyber version of “Talk to the Hand.”
I don’t like the trolls, and they have gotten more viTROLLic (vitriolic) over time. Rein them in a bit; make them think about common bonds of politeness.
In reference to the comment about web sites “dying within 6 months if people are forced to have registered user names.”
Check out:
The various home forums of Garden Web
Ikeafans
Various pet owners forums
These are very active and mostly quite polite. I have others but won’t bore people with a longer list.
I hope it works, because this site is a useful resource for us! (Thanks, Mr. B!)
Will I register? Probably. But maybe not, since I haven’t had too much INFORMATION (not commentary) to contribute, and haven’t had any questions that I desired an answer to.
wow… so this is what happens when people start going at each other and not even really using reason to put the other one down.. bravo .. bravo! How about.. I can only imagine Mr B. trying to look into IP addresses to see a pattern on the commentors and who they attack.. and somehow.. send FBI in for a raid at the IP address to take that punk to jail (I may even count as a punk)
btw.. where the heck did BXGRL get that people can face the judicial system for slandering online? If that was the case.. Mr B would have sent so many to people to jail by now cuz we keep calling him and his crew out. asking them for validation and proof for some of their posts.. IFFFFF we were slandering his good name.. why wouldn’t he sue us? Why would he even allow the people overseeing the comments to let the comments about how much Brownstoner sucks to be blocked from the get go. Gosh i miss reading about clemens and his trainer… BTW BXGIRL.. you sound like a hollering monkey after its banana was taken away..
Actually, last time this was discussed, someone wrote that Brownstoner has a sour, sarcastic, etc. tone in his posts himself – and this invites it from others. I have to agree, really. I’m used to it (having worked with the I-banker types), but that doesn’t make it charming. I think other (nicer) people ignore it and write comments in spite of the general tone.
Seems to me if the tone of discussions was to improve, it would start with (1) Brownstoner changing his tone, and (2) Acting like a real moderator and deleting the name calling and prejucidial statements.
It should be what people write, not their made-up online handles, or their previous posts, that matters. (I can dislike an obnoxious poster on some issues, but agree with them on others – who they are, or pretend to be, is irrelevant.) The text is what matters…all else is totally irrelevant.
Since (1) is probably impossible, (2) won’t happen either. Ain’t. gonna. happen…
Dear “bxgrl is an idiot”- I wish you had a job too. then maybe you could do something with your life instead of worrying so much about mine. I have no idea what makes you so malicious or such an unbelievable jerk (oooh- name calling!) but I really gotta wonder what sort of life you have if you really think you’re accomplishing something here. I see you sitting behind your little computer, chortling to yourself about how you’re going to flame us all and impress us with your wit, imagination and skill with words. Note to bgiai: not working.
But thanks for giving me a user name to ask Mr. B to delete. I’m sure in your immaturity you’ll simply set up another user name, even more stupid and childish than this one. It’s impossible to believe you can hold down a job let alone own a home. In fact I seriously doubt you’re capable of either. but suit yourself- make as much of an idiot of yourself as you like. i know you won’t disappoint me.
5:45- sigh, Sadly yes- it’s all me, all my fault. mea culpa mea culpa. (Er… you are aware this is sarcasm, correct? Hard to know if some of you have IQs high enough to recognize it.)
“Actually, the comments on curbed are lightyears ahead” in vitriol and snarkiness.
To guest poster 4:02 pm
Don’t forget to bring the kosher hot dogs. I ‘ll bring the Manishewitz and we’ll have a party. I hope this invitation is not for shabbos.
