If you’re a troll or a spammer, you better try to get your last licks in now, because by Monday, the guest commenting function will be a thing of the past on Brownstoner. If you haven’t signed up for a user account yet, please try to do so in the next couple of days. (If you don’t receive your verification email within a couple of minutes, just email us and we’ll verify you by hand.) If you already have a user account and voted for the elimination of guest commenting, please put your money where your mouth is and make an effort to get involved in discussions. Another to remember is that you are still anonymous when you comment with a username: Just pick a silly name like Cobble Hill Guy and stick with it; no other readers will be able to see your email address or know who you really are. Our hope and expectation is that the improved quality of the threads—along with our ability to boot anyone who steps out of bounds—will more than make up for any decline in the quantity of comments.

We know that there are a lot of long-time readers out there who’ve gradually been moving to the sidelines of the discussions as they’ve grown nastier and more inane, and hopefully they will take this as an opportunity to re-engage and take the sense of community back to its roots where we can have meaningful, useful discussions about real estate, architecture and the many issues that confront the borough and its neighborhoods as the inevitable wheels of change continue to turn.

There are going to be a number of new features coming to the site in the next few months, the use of which will also be enhanced by having a user account. The first of these, launching next week, involves a group effort at building a comprehensive restaurant guide for the borough. (Having a username is particularly useful because other readers can come to trust, or distrust, you opinions about restaurants.) Other features down the pipe include map-based mobile access of the Brownstoner archives, neighborhood emails and some new service-oriented improvements in the architect and contractor spaces.

  1. It’s spelled Hypocrite. Sigh. you’re still a fish. still in a barrel. still such an easy target. I’m going to stop- I’m beginning to feel sorry for you, it’s just too easy.

Guest @ 8:28- believe me it’s no fun, despite my paragraph above. Biff, The What, most others- they’re not after anyone personally. the what argues points- very emphatically, true, but I don’t see him into personal malicious attacks. Biff won’t attack anyone unless he’s provoked- but neither one of them tracks people all over the blog to trash them and I’m the same way. I play defense and as you noted, there’s plenty to be played. And sad to say, there are people who have a lot of fun attacking other people just because.

I have no problem with differences of opinion- I have a real problem with racism, insults to my intelligence and comments about my living situation or friends. I don’t care if you disagree with me, just don’t call me names because you do. After all, it’s 50/50 your (the generic “your”) opinion is wrong too. But some of the posters here can’t accept that so they resort to insults. Judging by the thread today that’s not going to change. So do what you think is best for you, and if you love the blog, get a throwaway email and a generic username. Maybe brownstoner can get rid of the post tracking or at least make it not public. Could that be done Mr. B?

  2. “I have no idea what makes you so malicious or such an unbelievable jerk (oooh- name calling!) but I really gotta wonder what sort of life you have if you really think you’re accomplishing something here. I see you sitting behind your little computer, chortling to yourself about how you’re going to flame us all and impress us with your wit, imagination and skill with words.”

    Hypocrit. 🙂

  3. I love this blog and have posted (what i think) are pretty helpful/useful comments. What bugs me about the new switch is that i don’t exactly WANT certain person’s attacking me and my comments – tracking the things i say on this blog and when they don’t agree, insist that “soandsoguest is a douchbag like always so who cares what soandsoquest has to say”

I see what happens to some member posters being called out about simple opinions and i see that certain person’s take this blog kinda seriously (and not in a good way). I’ll probably get a login but there are so many off topic discussions by members that it may not be worth remebering the password.

I disagree with a lot of things that Biff and The What and some other members who take over the comment boards have to say. I just don’t really want THEM remembering me, tracking my posts, (cause they can be harsh at times and I’m not always in the mood for a dumb blog post war) You know what i mean?

  4. “To guest poster
Don’t forget to bring the kosher hot dogs. I ‘ll bring the Manishewitz and we’ll have a party. I hope this invitation is not for shabbos.”

Ysabelle, I’m circumcised and everything. See you later!

  5. Bxgrl is correct. It’s called cyberstalking and according to Judge David harvey: Online harassment may also be indirect. The harasser may impersonate the victim and send abusive or
fraudulent e-mails in the victim’s name. The victim may be subscribed to mailing lists without his or her
consent with the result that hundreds of unwanted e-mails are received every day. Hostile Usenet posts
about the victim may appear or the perpetrator may spread vicious rumours about the victim online
leaving abuse messages about the victim on website guest books. The harasser may even transmit
offensive or altered images of the victim to websites or provide personal information about the victim
online.” Considering what happened to CHP, bxgrl is quite correct.
