Lots of Stores Still for Rent on Flatbush

With the recent renting of Royal Video, the construction in the old Dunkin Donuts spot, and the arrival of a grocer/deli on Flatbush Avenue, we wondered if that stretch of Flatbush was picking up. When we walked down Flatbush Avenue a year ago from Dean Street to Prospect Place we found nine empty storefronts in those three blocks. This year, the tally has been one-upped to ten empty storefronts in the same three blocks. There is some construction at 239 Flatbush, and the eating establishments we mentioned are moving in, but that’s still a notable amount of unused space for what’s a pretty high-traffic stretch.
Lots of Stores for Rent on Flatbush [Brownstoner]
I think I make a very good point actually. Why would the owners of Brklyn Larder ever admit that their stores aren’t doing well? They are so high on themselves anyway. And the fact that Maggie Gyllenhall shops there? Couldn’t care less. Just like the fact that Adrian Grenier is a member of Food Co-op does not faze me, but then again I’m not star struck.
Also, I happen to be a brownstone owner in Park Slope as are all my neighbors, so I am quite familiar with what it is to be upwardly mobile in Park Slope. That’s neither here nor there about what is served at Franny’s or Brklyn Larder (can’t stand the way this is spelled). We will just have to agree to disagree. I don’t like the proprietors, don’t like the look of the store and won’t shop or eat there. I think 50% of people out there that have tried either of these places will agree with me. And what’s it to you that I don’t like these places anyway? You own a percentage of the store??
And, at the end of the day, I stand by my position that a bakery would be most welcomed in the nabe.
“Side note: If you ever want to run into Maggie Gyllenhaal, I’ve seen her at least 3 times in the past couple months at BKLYN Larder. She loves that place. ”
You almost had me sold to try BKLYN Larder – but that killed it. Hahaha.

I know…that probably only makes you hate the store even more Tiptoe. But wealthy people do live in Park Slope and Prospect Heights…as shocking as I know that must be.
The street itself may not be “fancy” but the entire area surrounding it is.
You may not like Franny’s or BKLYN Larder, but to suggest that just because you don’t like them means they’re not a “neighborhood store” is rather ridiculous.
Especially given that there is a wait for Franny’s almost every night of the week (sometimes up to an hour) and I’ve been told by the owners that BKLYN Larder is doing better business than they ever expected. They do a ton of business on the weekend.
While I basically agree it’s not a “fancy” stretch in terms of looks, don’t you think it sounds kinda funny to say that two very successful places which you deem to be too expensive are thriving?
Thanks for the tip 11217, but certainly a bakery on Flatbush would be greatly appreciated as there is none on at least a 5-6 block stretch.
I hate Franny’s and won’t ever go there again. And, I do think Bklyn Larder is overpriced for even what you deem to be a very good sandwich. Pass on a store that stocks 5 items on shelf and isn’t a neighborhood store even though it tries to pretend it is. This is not a fancy stretch of Flatbush and the store is never, ever crowded, and is usually quite empty when I pass by at rush hour.
Tiptoe,
Cousin John’s Bakery is so close by. It’s on 7th Avenue between Lincoln and Berkeley Place. Been there for decades.
I don’t think BKLYN Larder or Franny’s think they’re giving anyone a “deal.” I think they’re giving people extremely high quality food which some people like to pay for. Every bite of food I’ve had from Franny’s has been excellent and there are some things at BKLYN Larder (like their home made Gelato) which are just outrageously good. I personally love their sandwiches. $8 is not a lot for a sandwich with high quality ingredients.
Al Di La is indeed always good. That and Franny’s and Lot 2 are my 3 favorite restaurants in the area.
“Where’d you go for dinner, dh”
Tried to go to Kaz a Nou but it was closed for a private party. Had to settle for Al Di La. Great, as always.
I can’t bring myself to enter Bklyn Larder. They think they’re giving someone a deal for a sandwich, cookie and cous cous for $13. No thanks. (I feel the same way about Franny’s). A real old-fashioned bakery is what would make me happy.
Where’d you go for dinner, dh?
