Wow. This house at 1009 Bergen Street in Crown Heights is going to make some old-house lover very happy. The two-family brick has some of the most incredible woodwork we’ve seen in a long time. The pièce de résistance? An incredible center staircase. The location, just in Bedford Avenue, is also quite central (as far as Crown Heights goes, at least). The only thing that doesn’t knock our socks off about the house (based upon what we can see in the photos) is the look of the kitchen on the garden level.

  1. You’re right, Maly. I reread Slopers post and saw the reference was to what really is a cellar. I guess the whole use of duplex is confusing me. I picture a duplex being at least 3 floors completely above ground and a third being “garden” level.

  2. Sloper, this house is built on incline that starts at Atlantic and continues to Easter Parkway. Since this on the north side of Bergen, there is a chance there are windows and a door at the back of the garden level, which I think can be seen in the picture of that interesting looking kitchen.
