House of the Day: 1009 Bergen Street

Wow. This house at 1009 Bergen Street in Crown Heights is going to make some old-house lover very happy. The two-family brick has some of the most incredible woodwork we’ve seen in a long time. The pièce de résistance? An incredible center staircase. The location, just in Bedford Avenue, is also quite central (as far as Crown Heights goes, at least). The only thing that doesn’t knock our socks off about the house (based upon what we can see in the photos) is the look of the kitchen on the garden level.

I’d e-mail her back, cc her boss, and let her know that when you do buy a house, you’ll make sure it’s not from her.
After one occasion where the agent was a no-show at their own open house, we ended up seeing this property twice – both times with other prospective buyers who were also scheduled to look at the house during the same window – so she hadn’t had to make a special trip there just for us or anything like that. We called the agent – with whom we have only had contact on these two occasions- the following day, at her request, to let her know that we had thought about it, and were not interested. She asked us why not, and we said that although it was a large lot and a beautiful house, we had chosen to look at smaller properties that might be in a more central location and have higher grade kitchen/bathroom finishes. Her response was quite rude, but we simply thanked her for her time and left it at that.
We neither contacted her again, nor did we request to see any other properties from her or her agency. We just got an unsolicited email from her today to inform us that “Just to let you know that 1009 Bergen has an accepted offer. The engineer during a home inspection said that the house is a pricelless gem and a very rarely available property.
Hope you’ll find a house as good as this one.”
Now, I know that not everybody is well versed in email etiquette, but that seems rude and unprofessional to me – and just plain odd to email out of the blue like that. I’m totally baffled. I feel like it merits a complaint to whomever her supervisor is at her agency.
What do you think, brownstoners???
Yes this is crazy! I remember in February this house was for sale for around 300k. The place previously had a big squatter problem, and was cement-blocked up. There are still many active violations on the property. I can’t believe it had that kind of original detail inside! The location is a mixed bag, its rough looking part of Bergen, and it’s quite close to the armory shelter, but Grant square is amazing!
This is crazy; this place was all cement-blocked up and had guys hauling trash out of it to fix the joint up. I can’t believe that this was hiding inside.
[I also can’t believe the stickey-keys thing is ongoing. SO annoying.]
Good house for someone who is “not depressed by fine woodwork.”
🙂
The wood work looks very peculiar in the photos. I’d have to see it in person.
All the floors are new.
But on the plus side, the house has tons of detail and appears to be in move in condition.
the house looks like a nice five-year project for someone who loves old houses and is not depressed by fine woodwork.
The stoop is odd.
The cellar counted as living space is sleazy but it seems to be the trend.
otherwise nice and clean with a lot of potential.
The front stoop situation looked as if the neighboring property to the east had a mirror image stoop, which was subsequently torn down. The photos do not show it, but now there is a commercial-ish extended front to the property adjacent on the east. It is unusual.
What IS with that stoop?!
(Good catch, NorthHeights)
I’ve never seen a crazy stoop like that!
Was it designed by Tim Burton?
