What’s a beautiful house in Crown Heights North worth these days? We have no idea, but this listing at 1265 Dean Street should help provide a data point. The four-story Romanesque Revival house is dripping with original detail, including some serious wood paneling, and is located on “one of the loveliest blocks in all of Brooklyn,” according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The corner location means lots of light but, on the downside, it also means higher taxes. The asking price is $925,000. Any guesses?

  1. Dave, yeah, it was on the market for at least a year. Then they dropped the price to $699,000 and had an offer within three weeks and that was that. (I never checked back to see what the closing price was.)

MM, alas, open house was shut though we did arrive at the dot of 6:04. Thanks for the supermarket info. I didn’t manage to go grocery shopping that day either but I will try Foodtown this week.

  2. The Foodtown is far superior to most Manhattan supermarkets…D’Agostinos, gristede’s and most of the Food Emporiums.

The delivery service is excelletn. I’ve used it twice and each time they would call me about any substitutions and it came precisely within the hour that I chose.

  3. Mopar, thanks, Amzi and I had fun showing you around. How was the open house?

The supermarket in question is Foodtown, in Restoration Plaza. Corner Fulton and Brooklyn Ave. Good produce, lots of organic and specialty foods, good everyday staples, large selections in most categories, decent deli counter, meat dept, and fresh bagels, muffins and baked goods. They carry soy products and vegetarian foods.

They also have on-line home delivery. I don’t know how far out they go, but would imagine most of the Bed Stuy/Crown Heights area. If you had seen what a piece of crap supermarket we had before, this one would look like Vegas to a gambling addict. As it is, it’s certainly the nicest supermarket around.

  4. mopar…I saw that house the evening it was here as HOTD. It was on the market for awhile. They did a nice job with their renovations. I don’t remember where they started at price wise. yes, bottom floor needed to be gutted.

Funny though, that was the night that I outed myself as Bold Type Guest. It was a rainy night and I think I was the only one to go to the open house and I signed in as Dave Somebody and as I was leaving Jerry Minsky, the broker, thought he had “busted” me as daveinbedstuy.

  5. The last partly-renovated brownstone I saw was listed for $699,000 and was snapped up immediately. This was the place on Putnam and Tompkins, a Corcoran listing, about six months ago.

Wasder saw it. It was listed here. Top three floors were beautifully redone, basement had not been finished. Kitchen was white marble with subway tile and powder room was brown marble with subway tile.

  6. So, Montrose, where is the great supermarket? I need to do some grocery shopping.

And a big thank you to you and Amzi for Sunday….I posted a little thank you in the Monday OT but you may not have seen it.

  7. “Come on East New York stop that! That area is Hood and you know it! Just because you see some retards wondering around that doesn’t mean Crown Heights has “Come of Age”.”

It’s a playground compared to ENY and Brownsville, where I’m from. But if you or anyone else is skeptical, that’s cool. I’m not a salesman, I bought my house pre-bubble, and my family and I are happy there, which is really all that counts to me in the end. As Martin Lawrence’s “Jerome” character would say, “MY thing gon’ BE alright.” Peace.
