House of the Day: Sweet on Madison Street
This beaut on Madison Street between Classon and Franklin looks like a score to us. Only a few yards from the the Clinton Hill border, this would be priced 50% higher if it were three or four blocks further west. There are not a lot of photos to go on, but the reno challenge doesn’t…

Only a few yards from the the Clinton Hill border, this would be priced 50% higher if it were three or four blocks further west. There are not a lot of photos to go on, but the reno challenge doesn’t look overwhelming to us. Good bones overlaid with some cheap sheetrock construction that can be easily ripped out. No idea about the mechanicals and plumbing–but we’d assume the worst. The four-story brownstone is currently configured as a three-family but looks to us like it could work well as a owner-occupied two-family or even a condo play, given the extra 1,600 square feet of unutilized FAR.

Folks, whatever happened to my suggestion of a community activist group to address the nabes ills? I guess we’re not ready to wash our dirty linen in public yet…. rose colored glasses, albeit square ones? 🙁
I live near a group home and it is not a problem, the guys seem well looked after and really, they have to live, too, right?
The only issue with churches is when they have loudspeakers broadcasting the sermon to the neighbors, which I find annoying.
There’s such a mixture of industrial/brownstones happening in Clinton Hill and the northern part of Bed-Stuy–parts are really pretty and parts are totally grungy. Kind of like the south Slope used to be (and now it’s getting all built up …)
the comments were directed completely towards the comments about all the unsavoriness of madison street–i.e. the baptist church–which btw is not baptist, the mentally retarded people on the block, and the drug trafficking from the meth clinic-
i did read all of the posts–
and the satire is pretty tight–but please excuse me-i did not know that this list was actually moderated by fairness–what about being fair to those who choose to worship god? or those or for some reason or another are mentally challenged??? i suppose we should ship all those “types” to east new york or brownsville or that is until you all decide to move there, gentrify, and gas up the real estate prices and property taxes.
then i guess they would have to go to canarsie-
You know, I don’t think that last posting is all that fair. Yes, it is true that often people post without thinking, but out of the back and forth emerges a somewhat informed discussion of issues which people normally avoid. Also, a review of this rather far ranging discussion would reveal very little of it is confined to Madison so I am not sure why the poster thinks people are dissing his/her block. Also, the satire could be tighter – really not sure which side the poster lands on.
having never posted on this–but drawn to it as my friend told me about the postings about 17 madison street—
so glad that none of you would be my neighbors–as this beautiful and friendly block would be too good for you-
yes- church does double park on sundays, but other than that those religious freaks don’t bother us religiously liberated people.
and oh yes-those damn mentally challenged people-other than the bus that picks them up in the morning you’d never know that they were there–except for when they are drooling and running naked and screaming down the street.
and god bless those drug addicts–they only start to bother you when they start peddling drugs to our little kids—
thanks god you don’t have to raise your kids on our block!!!!
wait till i tell you about the illegal immigrants!
obviously-this email is in jest–hope you all see how ignorant you sound—or maybe you are just happy being the NIMBY that we all love to hate-
Well, why don’t we get all toghether and sign petitions against it or whatever it takes, I don’t think anyone is happy with that clinic! Let’s mention it at the next CH Society meeting, let’s do something and not just talking!!!!
Ltjbukem, Many people have been complaining about the clinic before the 5 years that you note. IT’s infuriating because it is also within a block & a half of a public school. I’m curious as to what makes you think no one complained then. No one listened for whatever reasons.

Brownstoner, not that you have any free time on your hand, but for those CH residents who are interested we should create a CH quality of life advocacy group whose main mission would be to address the various ailments of the community, e.g., the methadone clinic, Fulton Street, short term hotels, crime, prostitution and drugs. With respect to these issues, I prefer revolution over evolution. Let other groups focus on house and garden tours, cultural affairs, etc. This group would be concerned about one thing and one thing only – eradicating the negative elements in the community and thereby improve the quality of life of all of its residents.
CH is a great nabe! It’s diverse and the housing stock is incredible. However, certain sections are very “problematic” and the various ills inflicting these areas need to be address. I think too many of us who live in CH are just happy watching our home values soar and have grown complacent, especially with respect to parts of the nabe that exist on the outskirts. Despite all of the nabe’s attributes, let’s not turn a blind eye to the obvious….
