house
Killer porch. That’s the first thing that’s leaps to mind about this 3-story Victorian in Fiske Terrace. The place is huge with a lot of original details (strange fireplaces, though, huh?) that we expect will catch buyers’ eyes. The big problemo, from where we sit, is that this is getting pretty far out–into Brooklyn College territory. Great houses but the commute to Manhattan’s starting to get a little long. Did anyone make it to the open house? Would be curious to hear a first-hand account.

  1. How did you walk to PLG? Over the Manhattan Bridge and then down Flatbush? One and a half hours is only double my subway commute from there and far less annoying, I’m sure — can’t wait for warm weather to return!

  2. Telecommuting is an option, especially in sitiuations like a transit strike, but there is an essential element in interaction with other actual human beings, isn’t there? Or have we all become so isolated with our iPods, BlackBerries, and cell phones that we don’t have any physical contact with other people anymore anyway?

  3. I lived in Brooklyn Heights for over ten years and very often (voluntarily!) walked to my job in Lower Manhattan, although not in winter. I still think the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most inspiring walks you can take. The Williamsburg Bridge, too, can be walked — not sure about the Manhattan.

Basically, in a pinch, you could walk from any of the surrounding communities — even, eventually, walk down Flatbush Ave Extension from Fort Greene, and then over the Manhattan (assuming this is possible). It would take a few hours, but desperate times, etc.

Too bad (or too good for them) they aren’t striking in the summer. I actually lived in Manhattan at the time of the last transit strike, and walked from the Village to the financial district where I was working and could have continued quite happily doing so until the weather changed. However, I don’t relish the thought of this in winter!

  4. FYI–There is also an express bus by Command that zips you to the financial district in 15 min and i have heard somehow drops you midtown in 35 min. And if you have a car we make it into tribeca in 12 min flat on a friday night for dinner…all of our commutes actually took longer from Park slope.

  5. Babs – I think your “too far to walk to manhattan” comment has to be the understatement of the year. Now granted, I’m a lazy bum and even though I live in Brooklyn Heights I wouldn’t walk to manhattan in the event of a strike (thank god for the water taxis!). I’m curious though, what Brooklyn nabes do you consider within walking distance of Manhattan – and maybe this is a good question for everybody buying further and further out in Brooklyn – could you or would you walk to work?
