In recent days, DOT has been implementing its much-discussed plan to make Flushing Avenue along the Navy Yard more friendly to bicyclists. Although the original plan that called for making Flushing a one-way street was shot down, a modified plan that calls for a single two-way bike lane east of Washington and two separate one-way bike lanes west of Washington won widespread support. When we cycled past yesterday morning, the permanent lines were painted as far west as about North Oxford Street.

  1. no one’s taking your bait tybur6, they know better than to tangle with you about bikes!

[to be clear, just a little joke, not implying anything about the relative merits of cars vs. bikes…]

  2. I thought not eating oysters in months without an R had more to do with their reporductive cycles than refrigeration – they are a bit “milkier” in the summer months, aren’t they? Although I had some fabulous just-plucked (or whatever you do to them) in Vendee one summer.

  3. Again — were there cars on Hoyt? i.e., were the bikes in the way of the cars? Or did the bikes, as all vehicles, choose to ride in the *middle* of the road until they needed to move to the side?

(Also, as a side note, and this is a major DOT screw up if you ask me… the PPW bike lane is VERY bumpy. The pavement is very choppy along the curb — the road might be preferable going south.)

  4. So on-topic, these comments.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, this bike lane will help tame a nasty stretch of roadway that’s extremely heavily used by cyclists already, and is a key link in the future waterfront greenway.

But hey, let’s talk about boogers and jizz instead.

“There were 5 bicyclists that came by. Each and every one of them was in the car lane, NOT the bike lane.”

Because bike lanes are mostly for the purpose of scoring anti-car political points.

Actual cyclists don’t seem to have much use for them.
