In recent days, DOT has been implementing its much-discussed plan to make Flushing Avenue along the Navy Yard more friendly to bicyclists. Although the original plan that called for making Flushing a one-way street was shot down, a modified plan that calls for a single two-way bike lane east of Washington and two separate one-way bike lanes west of Washington won widespread support. When we cycled past yesterday morning, the permanent lines were painted as far west as about North Oxford Street.

“Nomi, I got $20 wager that’s a helmet” (more4less)
Hey, give him a break. He can’t help the shape of his head.
Salmon. Good. So next time I can scream “salmon!” at them?
Will that scare them? Do they have feelings?
Helmet or fro?
btw — the shadow of my head looks like I wear a helmet… all the time.

Nomi — the “salmon” are ridiculous. They’re even more of a problem when you’re on a bike!
The majority of the salmon seems to be Hispanic and Asian…. basically all of the delivery guys and a bunch of others. Is this cultural? A remnant of preferred practice in their (or their family’s) country of origin?
They are not, generally speaking, taking short-cuts. They are *actively* seeking roads going in the wrong direction.
(I know this because I have — on many occasions — crisscrossed with these salmon going to the same destination, but I take the ‘with traffic’ route and they take the ‘against traffic’ route)
“From the shadow in the pic I’m guessing Mr B is a helmet-wearer”
Nah, that’s just his head.
Oh, man, this is funny. Thank you! Need it.
I did have my worst scare ever with a cyclist last week. A common thing, but this was the closest I’ve ever to hitting someone on a bike. I was turning left onto Clinton and he was going south (wrong way). I truly had to slam on the breaks, squeaking and all, in order to avoid smashing right into him. He appeared unfazed, while I sat there frozen trying (in vain) to regain a regular heartbeat.
