An airy co-op in a late 19th century Beaux-Arts apartment building has high ceilings, a mantel, delicate plaster decoration, and stained glass windows. It’s on the second floor of 126 Greene Avenue, also known as 385 Clinton Avenue, in the Clinton Hill Historic District.

The brown-brick building appears quite modern for its time, with bands and quoins of cream stone and simple, rectangular forms. In late 1898, it was being advertised in the Brooklyn Eagle as the “handsomest apartment house in Borough of Brooklyn” with spacious units of “eight and nine outside rooms.” The building’s “every modern improvement” included “electric passenger elevators” and “liveried hall attendants.” Rents ranged from $780 to $2,200 for the year.

Those four- and five-bedroom units with double parlors and dining rooms have evidently been broken up; now the four-story elevator building has 16 apartments of five and six rooms apiece. This one has five, including a large living room with built-in bookcases, pocket doors, tall windows, stained glass, and a decorative painted wood mantel with original mosaic tile and insert.

The pocket doors lead to a flexible space that could work as an office, dining room, or third bedroom. The two main bedrooms are large enough for a queen bed or bigger; one has a chimney breast with decorative fireplace and original hearth but no mantel. Both have a closet, the only two in the unit.

The kitchen has two tall windows and has recently been updated with cream Shaker-style cabinets, composite counters, stone subway tile backsplash, and dishwasher. The floors are wood and there is space for dining.

The classic black and white bath has also been updated and has a deep tub, pedestal sink, white subway wall tile with black trim, and black and white tile floor.

Included is a private 5-by-8-foot storage room in the cellar. The building has shared laundry and a landscaped garden with barbecue grills.

Maintenance for this apartment is $1,080 a month. Listed by Mary Priebe of Brown Harris Stevens, it’s priced at $1.4 million. Think it will get ask?
