Months ago we showed you a glass addition under construction, but still covered up, at 463 Sackett Street in Carroll Gardens. Now it’s out in the open, just in time for the springtime sun!

  1. As I said in the last thread, this is really an updating of the traditional Greenwich Village studio addition. Yes, it is proportionally ungainly compared to the Village precedents because the historic building itself is so small.

But this looks to be well designed, and is certainly an improvement over the alternatives – be they fieldstone (both the buildings to either side look to be part of the same historic row) or the many, many other additions and remuddlings we’ve seen over the years.

I am pleased to be living in a city where the value of small houses, originally built for working people, can rise in value enough to make economic sense to spend a fortune to add an ugly addition such as this. You can probably buy a house such as this an any number of old mill towns east of the Mississippi for less than the price of a new Chevrolet.

Are people still spoouting this sort of crap?????

Do people in paris spout this about the french countryside? Do people in Hong Kong spout this about the new territories? Do people in tokyo spout this about niigata???

  3. It could look a lot worse-at least it slants back and makes a vague reference to the mansard type roofs you sometimes see on rowhouses. I just wish they had tried harder to make it a little more period contextual. I realize it disrupts the rooflines but I’m used to seeing blocks where the rooflines go up and down and I don’t necessarily mind that. Depends on the block though.
