TV antenna in north Park Slope
Awesome; leave it to an engineer like your dad to figure things out. Sounds like we could learn from him.

I recently bought a multidirectional indoor TV antenna (The Leaf) in the hope of picking up the free digital channels being transmitted from just 5 miles away in Manhattan. But it is only picking up 3 of the 15 or so channels that the FCC say it should be able to receive in my zip code (just channels 7, 11 and 13). I’ve tried positioning the antenna in various places/directions but to no avail. Has anyone had any better luck, or can anyone advise me where I might be going wrong? Thank you.

We used a Winegard antenna (SS-3000 model maybe) and in Center Slope received all of the local channels plus a bunch of others including a wide variety of UHF channels as well as mutlple versions of the channels 4, 7, 11 (ie 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4) etc. At least 25-30 channels in total. We were on the first floor but on the corner and kind of a clear open air view toward the city.

I made my UHF antenna from some guy’s plans posted on techorator.blogspot.com, cost me about $20 and I was able to get 96 channels, multiples as well of course. I think the antennas work best at higher elevations with unobstructed paths to the broadcast towers. Can you set something up on your rooftop aimed towards the Empire State Building?

I know it’s very corporate for a company to seek out posts like this online, but we want to fix it if possible. Would you email our technical guys at support@gomohu.com so they can take a crack at it? Dominic Ruiz-Esparza Marketing Coordinator

OP here – thanks for the responses. I’m talking to the Leaf tech guys to see if they can help. If that doesn’t work out, I may try Totoro’s home made antenna though I fear that my location (ground floor, lots of buildings and trees around me) may mean this will never work. I’ll let you all know the outcome.

OP here again. My problem is resolved. It turns out I needed to do a Factory Reset on my TV, as it had somehow been set not to receive UHF signals. I have no recollection of setting it up like this when i bought it two years ago but I guess I must’ve done. Anyway, I can now receive 40 channels, and am getting crystal clear reception on all of them. The support people at Mohu were extremely helpful (though it was my electrical engineer father who finally figured it out). Thanks Dominic for connecting me to Mohu support – I will certainly recommend the Leaf to any friends who are also kicking the cable habit.
