Modern (long and narrow) wood burning fireplaces?

In addition to what’s been said above, fireplaces in NYC need MEA numbers to be legal. A custom built fireplace won’t have an MEA number. And of course don’t forget about the required fresh air intake. IMHO, either go with a gas fireplace or go with a more traditional shape.

We are trying to design a Great Room and face the dilemma of trying to squeeze the Flat Screen TV over the fireplace. Given our modern design aesthetic, the long but narrow fireplace would certainly work like the one in the photo. The question is where can I find a wood burning (not gas) fireplace? Are there fabricators who make these domestically (New York – Mid Atlantic)?Thanks!

For gas there are plenty of prefabricated solutions. However, for wood you’ll probably need to build it custom. I suggest showing the picture and a sketch to a fireplace expert (like Manny LaSalle) and see if he can work out the details regarding the mechanics of it. You need the right proportions for optimum draw and someone like Manny will be able to guide you as to what your limitations are for your specific application. This will probably not be done cheaply but you’ll get exactly what you want and something that functions properly.

TV over the fireplace often a bad idea. Too high for optimum viewing angle, you’ll get a sore neck after a movie. I’d be especially hesitant to do it over a wood fireplace as you’ll get some smoke and particulate rising right up into the vents.
