Window Bars that we can open, on outside of window
Any ironworks place should make these for you. It’s a pretty standard custom product. It will have a hinge and latch you can put a lock in. Keep the key to the lock close by, visible from the inside, but hidden and unreachable by someone outside.

We have windows that we want to put bars on (outside the window) for security, but also want to be able to open them (from the inside) in case of fire or emergency. Having trouble figuring out exactly which ones have the right latches or what-have-you to be able to open them from the inside, but obviously not allow intruders to open from the outside. Any suggestions welcome, thanks!

The normal NYFD approved gates won’t work because they open inwards. If you can get one made that opens out, you’re set.

I think the usual ones open inward so I do not think it would be helpful to your problem. What you could probably do is to use a collapsible frame that opens inward as well, but with grills in between. You can then have a lock attached to it so it would not open just instantly but give you access to the window in case some form of emergency comes up. I think this would be a good option for you.

I see a lot like you are describing in the Chinese sections of Brooklyn. Don’t have any contacts for you but there are metal workers sprinkled around 8th avenue in the 50s and 60s that I am pretty sure make these. Also in chinatown.
