Temporary Window Security
Some young friends are moving into a ground floor apartment that does not have security bars on the windows and the landlord does not intend to install them. Any good ideas for temporary security of some kind?
Thanks.

With the landlord’s permission you could always install your own accordion gates. The new ones are able to be opened from the inside per code.

To be clearer. Do you think the type of bars used to child proof are also good for security? The windows are on the street, but if they are open at all some one could crawl in ala the rape on the UES last week-end. The screw thing works if you are only opening the window less than the size of a head or body. If you want more air, they don’t help.

How much to do depends on how exposed the windows are and the crime level in the neighborhood. It’s less likely that anyone would smash the glass if the windows are fully visible from the sidewalk and there are usually people around, especially if the person would then have to wedge themselves through the broken window to enter (e.g. they couldn’t open the window out of their way with the glass broken like you could with a french door). I would use wood dowels and perhaps removable nails through the window frame (with landlord’s permission) to secure the windows. I’d worry a lot more about windows hidden behind bushes or fences or otherwise out of sight and windows that would be easy for a person to get through. Be careful to secure windows that have ACs in them. 3M window film will slow down a burglar, but not fully prevent a break in through glass. Mostly, I’d be super careful to keep windows locked, get renters’ insurance, and keep any valuables in a safe deposit box at the bank (extra checkbooks, expensive jewelry etc.).
