We’d like to install several interior and exterior cameras in our building, probably about 12 total. I’ve seen systems at Costco for example but have no idea if these are garbage or if they’re actually quite good. One question though is can you run a reliable wireless system for a 5 story building with cameras on each floor, one in the basement and two or three outdoors or does it have to be done with cables? I know that if I try and use a cordless landline on an upper floor from a base on the ground floor that the signal doesn’t carry that far so I can’t imagine how a wireless or wifi system could handle all those locations but it certainly would make the installation much easier. Also, if anyone has used a third party to install a system, recommendations for that would be welcomed as well. Thanks.

I don’t have a recommendation, per se, but I do have some experience with one of those “CostCo” type systems. Briefly, the wireless systems you will find do have a limited range, resolution and frame-rate. The system I have is a FOSCAM IW10 (I think, I’m not looking at it) and is, more or less, for “casual” security so that I can see if the food-delivery-guy is outside or who it is that’s ringing my doorbell in the middle of the day. I also use it to keep an eye on my apartment when travelling (only because we were robbed once). It is effective for these purposes, in conjunction with a program called ISKY and an install of TEAMVIEWER, I can view my apartment from just about anywhere… but actually recognizing faces and watching small movements would be difficult. Low-budget wireless systems do have downsides. Even within 10 feet of a range-extender, the IP cameras can (and do) drop signal regularly. Most times they reset themselves, no problem, but it’s a bother (especially on Sushi night 😉 ) The framerates can also be quite slow (about 6FPS depending upon your network speed, what wireless protocol the cameras use, and the amount of cameras/traffic on your network). Depending upon the size of your house, you may need to run wifi-range-extenders. It is my opinion that a wired system will be superior in nearly every way with the notable exception that you’d have to run wires everywhere… while a truly great wireless system may be cost-prohibitive. There are some new devices popping up which seem to be improvements upon these “CostCo” systems… Canary is a neat little thing (although somewhat pricey), WEMO has some cameras, and DropCam. I have no experience with them, but again, given the distance you may need to place range-extenders throughout your house/halls. Good luck.
