motion detector lights

I had an electrician install my outdoor lights….I have completed many home projects myself but electricity is one thing I won’t touch, just plain scared of it. There are many choices to consider regarding outdoor lighting: bulb type, dust-to dawn and motion feature, and whether the fixture is flush mounted (recessed) or wall mounted. If you have an electrical box, look at it and determine the type of fixture you need. Does it sit on the wall or inside of the wall? The most efficient bulb would be an led; this is important if you choose the dusk-to-dawn feature which will remain “on” for several hours a night. My lights are dusk-to-dawn but include a motion detector. They are on at a low level all night but get brighter when motion is detected.

After some uninvited activity on our fire escapes we figured we’d better invest in some motion detector lights and such. Any leads out there on somebody who can advise us on what and how? There are many choices out there, and I’d appreciate an experts’ opinion. Thanks.

I’m just curious as to what kind of ‘expertise’ you think is needed to install an off-the-shelf light you can get at HD and put up yourself (if there’s already a light of course.) What are these ‘choices’ in something so basic?

We have a big building with many fire escapes. I would think somebody has knowledge of the best range that these things cover, the best place to put them, do they go all the way on top of the building, should we install them halfway, really, is it that hard to imagine that something might be more involved than taking an item off the HD shelves and installing it? Have you seen the price range of these things? Might somebody be able to tell me if the higher priced one is better or not? I am not talking about installing, I am talking about covering safety concerns for a large building.
