I was looking into installing a security camera outside the building and in the front hallway. I was hoping to find something that could be accessed via smartphone and have the potential to backup the footage to the computer. Not sure about wireless or wired, though I would go with wireless if it didn’t sacrifice quality of the footage and reliability of the system. I know there are lots of new companies doing this sort of system. Anyone have something they can recommend?

I recommend a hikvision system. They have a well priced 4mp camera and 4 channel nvr (network video recorder) that can be accessed from the Internet. B&hphoto sells thems.

Who would you recommend to install this kind of system? An electrician or is there someone more specialized?

It’s actually quite simple. It’s just one cable (cat 5e or higher) from the nvr to each camera. The nvr is plug and play, it detects each camera and the software isn’t that complicated. While I don’t have anyone I’d recommend, you’re probably better off finding someone that does these kind of things on a daily basis, so he’ll know where and how to position each camera for optimal viewing/coverage and won’t be totally clueless about how to set up the nvr.

We have several of the wireless Samsung Smartcam Pro HD 1080p cameras that have built-in SD card slots pointed out front, out back, and inside the basement. You can access them by cellphone, tablet, computer, etc from anywhere. Crystal clear HD picture. They can also be set to continuously record to the SD card or only record when there is movement. We have ours set to movement only and the card holds about 3 months worth of clips on the one out front (and there is ALWAYS someone walking or driving by) which self-destruct as the card gets full. The ones in the basement and out back have never gotten full (over a year now) as there isn’t as much movement there. The continuous recording mode also self cleans the old stuff off as well. You can also set them to only record either continuously or from movement during certain times of the day or night as well. They are self-installable – all you need is a power receptacle for the adapter, and a wifi router to pair them to. The Samsung account, apps, and website are all free for purchasers of the cameras. They even have mics and tiny speakers in them so I can both see and hear what my kids are doing as well as yell at them from Los Angeles if I want. At night in the dark they also have infrared vision so I can see what my cat is up to in the basement. Highly recommend.

williamsburgguys – i read that the latest firmware just removed the local functionality (to use your own HDD / NAS) and now requires that you use samsungsmartcam.com Is that your experience as well?

Hmm. I’m not sure as I have always just used the SD cards to pop into my computer if I want to review the past recordings and have always used the website to do remote monitoring, cleanup, and change camera settings. I have 64GB SD cards in them. You can review the clips in the past using the website and phone apps but it’s slower than taking out the card and doing it directly. Mine still uploads the clips to my Google GDrive folder however if I tell it to (there is a place on the website where you can enter your Gmail credentials and let it store them there), but I generally just let it go to the SD Card. Mine all have the latest firmware. In the past year, three times the police have used some of the recordings to help find criminals. Two were package thieves the camera caught, and one was a kid robbed in a Craigslist shoe-sale-gone-bad in front of the house.
