Verizon Fios Installation

I just ordered Verizon Fios, and I’m wondering how others who have it found the installation process. Specifically, was the technician able to mount the ONT (optical network terminal) on the outside wall of your house? I have CAT5e running from the rear wall of my house to a central “hub” at the front of the cellar (where all the other ethernet cables in the house terminate). Anything I should know ahead of time to make sure that this is a smooth process? Thanks.

I too had Cat5 cable running from the back of the house, but the tech ignored it and ran the fiber all the way to where my hub (switch) is in the basement – the fiber is LONG and a lot of it was left spooled up by the hub. They installed more than just the ONT – they also put in a backup power box (UPS) connected to the ONT (not sure why they think that’s necessary). Anyway, it’s two pieces of gear that you want to keep dry and safe, so if you don’t have a place for them, they’ll have to go inside. If you have some kind of outside box they can go in (with a power outlet), then I’m sure they wouldn’t care if you kept them outside.

My installation was different from yours but the tech was good. I suggest you track his work – esp. if any equipment has to be installed in the living area: you can ask for less obtrusive placement in case he’s being lazy & also there are choices about the covers on the equipment – he wanted to do black because that’s what he’d brought in from the truck but he had white which I preferred. (I got the white.)
