Verifying if a roofer is licensed & insured
Is there a website where I can check if a roofer is licensed and insured? I thought the NYS Licensed Professions website would have this information but I can’t seem to track it down.
Thank you.

Zampano’s answer is not quite correct. A home improvement contractor’s license can be found on the DCA website. If that contractor does not do any work requiring a permit (roof repair does not) they do not have to be registered with the DOB. If you want their insurance documents otherwise, just ask for it.

go to NYCDOB at nyc.gov. The site will tell you if the contractor has insurances and whether they are a licensed home improvement contractor, i.e can work on 1 to 4 familes. For most other kinds of work, there in no license, but there are insurance requirements. Of course, this only applies to contractors who have “tracking numbers” with NYC DOB. If a contractor does not work on 1 to 4 families and does not do work that requires a DOB permit, they will not appear in these data bases, but they are still required to have insurances.
