Understoop metal grill door jamming

THe metal framed security door under my stoop is getting harder and harder to shut, and now pretty much jammed closed… as if it’s been slowly expanding inside its frame or the frame is shrinking around it. Havent had this issue in the past 3+ years, so it’s not summer heat and i am a little puzzled as to what’s happening here (hinges still look tight, surrounding masonry aint moving) — can anyone confirm that an ironwork outfit is the best to address this, or some other specialist? Any recommendations?

I had the same problem, the old brownstone stoop had been slowly collapsing due to the old “original” sandy mortar mixed used in the old days. It had been coming loose all over the place under the stairs, especially near the gate. This affected the gate movement to the point that I had to put ALL my weight on the gate to close shut. appreciate your (and mr. rh’s) thinking on this – ironwork it will be, i reckon; looks like the frame can be reset a little wider by breaking & redoing a few spot welds.

Me again. This was hubby’s opinion when I asked about Peralta. No, he didn’t answer my initial question and he had the nerve to disagree with my theory…. _____________________________________ I would guess that it could be tree roots or settling. The other possibility is rust pushing the frame in. It will need an ironwork company to fix since the frame probably needs to be removed and reset. But the cause of the problem needs to be found. The solution may just require grinding the frame or door to give clearance

And the ironwork isn’t pulling away from or moving around under there? If it is just the ironwork, I was going to recommend the company that did some work on my house, but their website leads to a male escort service in L.A. now. In any case, you can try to Google “Peralta Metal Works”. Omar Peralta is the owner. I don’t even know if they do residential. My husband knows them through his heavy construction work. But it’s worth a shot. You might want to talk to a mason as well to see if the door needs to be readjusted in the space. That would be my first guess…that something is weighing that frame down. rh – good question: i assume it’s fine – no cracks, bricks on the inner walls look in grand shape (repointed/reset 3 years ago) but could well be that rainwater running under down under the ‘nose’ of the stoop these last 6 months has eroded just enough bedding for everything to have settled some tiny tiny amount and caused this? cannot even see hairlines cracks though. that rainwater channel has been fixed now.

It’s a mean metal fairy hitting all over Bklyn. I have a purpose-made screw that I’ve used for 20 years that didn’t work this year: either it had shrunk or the eye had grown.

Arkady, the hinges are fine – once ajar, door swings back and forth like a champ. problem is that it’s now an ever-tighter squeeze into the metal frame posts to latch it closed.

Try spraying the hinges w/ WD-40 – ‘exercise’ them after you’ve sprayed so it sinks in.
