I got ours done in Park Slope a couple years back through the Treepit Enlargement Project. E-mail address is TreePEP@gmail.com. It couldn’t have been easier and only took a couple weeks. At the time they posted an (unfortunately formatted) message on the Park Slope Parents list that read as follows: Help Protect your Street Trees!**** * * *TreePEP (The Tree Pit Enlargement Project*) ** * * *If street trees make your city life more livable, thank them!***** TreePEP (The Tree Pit Enlargement Project) was created to encourage homeowners to enlarge the tree pits in front of their homes. We offer discounted rates of as little as $300 for pit enlargement. Our primary service area is Park Slope, however services are sometimes provided in other neighborhoods. For an additional cost, TreePEP rebuilds sidewalks that have been damaged by tree roots. **** ** ** *Why should you enlarge your tree pit?***** Many street trees die each year because inadequate pits restrict root growth and prevent roots from absorbing enough water. Enlarging pits enables roots to expand and absorb more water and helps alleviate the pollution of New York’s waterways caused by storm water run-off. **** ** ** *What do you get for your money?***** TreePEP obtains permits/pays permit fees, designs suitable pits, removes concrete while protecting tree roots and conducts on-site consultations with Brooklyn Forestry when necessary. **** ** ** Because TreePEP was created to protect trees, we are the only contractor service that follows Forestry recommendations and fills enlarged pits with top soil and lay mulch. We also provide guidance for tree care and bed landscaping. **** We also provide support for many tree-pit related issues. Our FaceBook page illustrates these topics and our work with photos. For example:**** – Suggestions for low-cost tree guards (Coming soon- collaboration with a community organization to create a low-cost, durable guard)**** – “Are you Killing your tree with Kindness”- common gardener mistakes.*** * – Before/After photos of TreePEP pit enlargements and new sidewalks.**** – To inspire gardeners, a virtual walking tour of Park Slope’s colorful tree bed gardens. *Send us a photo of your garden to add to our growing collection!***** *TreePEP is endorsed by Councilmember Brad Lander.***** **** *To learn more: Like us on FaceBook or contact us at TreePEP@gmail.com

It can take forever for DoT. If you have slate pavers, hire a bluestone specialist; if it’s concrete then any mason can do it.
